How To: Check & Delete Devices Connected to Your Apple ID to Remove Items You No Longer Use

How To: Check & Delete Devices Connected to Your Apple ID to Remove Items You No Longer Use
With the growing list of products Apple offers, the number of devices connected to your Apple ID can get quite extensive. Having all those devices connected to your Apple ID helps you keep track of them, but when it comes time to part ways with an Apple TV or Apple Watch, those devices can still be attached to your Apple ID. In some cases, this could affect the overall security of your account. For convenience's sake, you can manage your list of Apple devices right from your iPhone. I'd suggest everybody do this every now and then to check which devices are connected to your account, and you'll see why in a second.
Why You Should Check Your Apple ID Device ListIf you no longer have one of the listed devices, whether it was stolen, lost, sold, or given away, there's no point in them being attached to your Apple ID. You may even find devices you don't recognize at all. In these cases, it's best to remove them. From a security standpoint, if you're not using the device anymore and have two-factor authentication set up for your Apple ID, it's even more important to remove the devices as they can be used to receive 2FA verification codes when logging into Apple or iCloud services from a new device.
Items That Show Up in Your Apple ID Device ListDevices you can view and remove in your Apple ID account include almost every major Apple product: iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, Apple Watch, and Apple TV. AirPods are not included as those don't connect to your Apple ID, even though they will show up in Find My iPhone so you can track them down if lost.As far as non-Apple devices go, you can also view Windows 10 machines that you logged into iCloud with, such as a Surface Laptop 2 or Surface Go. Instead of viewing an image of the device, machines using Windows 10 and higher will have an icon with four gray diamonds inside a larger diamond shape.
Removing Items from Your Apple Device ListDeleting devices from your list can be done from iCloud.com, but this post will only focus on doing so from an iPhone as that will be the easiest way for most Apple users to remove devices from their account. This is most useful whenever you sell, give away, or just lose a device.Don't confuse this with the process of unlinking devices from your iTunes account, which is very similar, but an entirely different thing. Authorized devices with iTunes are just for iTunes, and you can authorize iTunes use on devices not your own, so removing them in iTunes won't remove them from your Apple ID account.

Step 1: Open Your Apple ID SettingsOpen up the Settings, then tap on your name, which houses all of your important Apple information, including Apple ID, iCloud, iTunes, and App Store preferences. The devices connected to your account will be listed in order at the very bottom of the menu. The first device listed (example: "This iPhone") will be the device you are using and the rest will be your other Apple devices.

Step 2: Remove Devices You Don't Need AnymoreTo remove devices you are not using anymore, tap its name. Within the menu for Device Info, go to the very bottom and tap on the "Remove from Account" option. You'll get a prompt to confirm you want to remove it, so press "Remove" on that.Once you remove a device, it will never show up in your Apple device list again unless it connects back to the internet with your Apple ID logged in. This may be annoying if you're trying to eradicate it from the list altogether, so you'll need to make sure you're logged out of your Apple ID on the device first. It's also worth noting that within this Device Info menu, you'll also get access to other important information, such as whether Find My iPhone (or iPad, iPod, or Mac) is on or off. If it's the device you're using, you'll also get a toggle for it.Other data here may include Send Last Location, the model name, software version, serial number, IMEI, phone number, and Apple Pay cards, the latter of which can be turned off per device. This serves as an easy way to keep track of important device information you may need one day.
Important Things to Consider When Removing DevicesIf you're giving the device to a family member, logging out of iCloud, iTunes, iMessage, FaceTime, and Game Center is probably good enough. When selling an Apple device like an iPhone or iPad, it's good to wipe the device which will remove your Apple ID information and disable Find My iPhone and Activation Lock. When it's an Apple device that was lost or stolen, before you remove it from your Apple device list, you'll want to use Find My iPhone to mark it as lost so that no one else can use it. Then, remote wipe it. That way, Activation Lock will prevent anyone who tries to log in to their own account on the device, a security measure meant to deter thieves and other purveyors of stolen goods. After, you can remove the device as described above or directly in Find My iPhone after remote wiping it.If you were removing a device that was lost, stolen, or unknown to you, you may want to consider changing your Apple ID password as an extra precaution.Don't Miss: What to Do After Your iPhone Is Lost or Stolen — The Ultimate GuideFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

Energy Saver 101: How to Control When Your Mac Starts, Sleeps, & Shuts Down
Work, school, and everything in between keeps us pretty busy—so much so, that sometimes we run out of the house with our shirts on backwards, our headphones misplaced, and our computers running all day long. While I can't help you with the first two problems, I can definitely give you advice on how to make sure you never leave your computer on when you're not using it. You know you can easily schedule your Mac to not only shut down, restart, or go to sleep at a certain time, but also turn on and wake up for when you need it ready.

How to Schedule Your Mac with Energy SaverOpen your System Preferences and click on Energy Saver. In Energy Saver, click on the Schedule option at the bottom right. To schedule your Mac to either start or wake up, check the box at the top, select which day you want it to turn on (or select every day), then select the time. To schedule your Mac to fall asleep, restart, or shut down at a certain time, check the second box, select which option you want (you can only choose one), then choose the day and time. Once you're finished, hit OK and your Mac operations are now scheduled. For a scheduled shutdown, restart, or sleep, a notification will appear at the scheduled time. Disable all schedules by going back to Energy Saver and unchecking the boxes next to the options you adjusted in the fourth step.

Gaming: The 9 Best Free Trivia Games for Android & iPhone
Trivia games are a great way to test your knowledge and learn about people and things you never knew of before. They're ideal in a group setting because they can serve as the perfect conversation starter when you're enjoying time with friends, family, or even complete strangers.Everyone can find their niche in a trivia game — even if they're not trivia buffs. It really boils down to your individual interests, as you'll naturally have knowledge about the things you're into. As such, we decided to come up with a list of the best free trivia games that are available on both Google Play and the iOS App Store. We made sure that all games in this list were completely free, and we gave priority to ones that don't require in-app purchases. We also ruled out games with obtrusive ads, because that can easily spoil the fun. So after several days of testing every trivia game we could get our hands on, we're proud to share our nine picks for the best trivia games for iPhone and Android.Don't Miss: The 9 Best Free Puzzle Games for Your iPhone or Android

1. QuizUpBilled as "the biggest trivia game in the world," QuizUp pits you against friends and people who share your interests. There are 149 unique topics to follow, and you can choose to play by yourself in single player mode, select a random opponent, or pick from a list of available friends to get started. To keep tie games to a minimum, players who are quicker at giving the correct answers earn slightly more points, so answering with speed is crucial. Geography Quiz is a great trivia app that makes it enjoyable. The game has you answer where a particular country, city, or landmark is located by putting a pin in the location on a map. A right answer rewards you with points, and there are ten rounds to a game, which can vary from the more obvious find-the-country variety to locations of football stadiums across the US.There's even a nifty multiplayer mode that can support up to 8 players on one device, where you and your opponents pass it around to see who gets the most points. 8. 80's Quiz GameThe 1980s marked the beginning of pop music as we now know it and brought us iconic movies like Wall Street and Scarface. Really, there are many things to love about this special decade, so trivia gamers with a soft spot for this bygone age are sure to enjoy 80's Quiz Game.As the name implies, this game consists mostly of pop culture trivia questions associated with this awesome era. But 80's Quiz Game also has a word game element to it — you have to fill in the blanks with letters, as opposed to multiple choice or true or false questions. There are extra letters provided to throw you off and keep you challenged, so be sure to look out for those when filling in an answer.Thankfully, you're rewarded with coins for every right answer you give, which you can use for hints to either fill in the word letter by letter, get rid of extra letters, or solve the puzzle completely. Ads are few and far between, so overall, it's a totally tubular test of knowledge.Install 80's Quiz Game: Android | iOS

9. True or FalseTrue or False is a great trivia game that has you answer questions from various categories like tech, food, and flora and fauna, to name a few. The game pits you against other players while racing against the clock as you figure out the right answer. There are five rounds in a game, with the first four containing three multiple choice questions, and the fifth and final round consisting of six true or false questions. Naturally, the player who gets the most correct answers wins the game.Players take turns answering questions, which means you have to wait for your opponent to finish. As such, we recommended giving the game notification access when prompted so that you'll know when it's your turn to play. Ads are easily closed, though you have the option to get rid of them for $2.99. If you want a challenging multiplayer trivia game that moves at a more relaxing pace, then True or False is a great option.Install True or False: Android | iOS And that's the end of our list! Are there any great trivia games for both Android and iPhone that didn't make the cut? How To: Get Popup SMS Alerts & Reply from Within Any Full Screen App on Your Samsung Galaxy S3
Whenever the word "popup" pops up, I immediately cringe because all I can think about are those obnoxious ads that ruin my everyday browsing experience. But, not all popups are evil.On your Samsung Galaxy S3 or other Android device, popups are used to notify you of important messages and alerts. As nice as these are, sometimes they can be limited. For instance, when I'm playing Candy Crush Saga or any other full screen app, I don't even get to see my incoming texts; all I get is a lousy flashing light and vibration. However, I don't want to sacrifice my gameplay just so I can see what Bobby messaged me.Is there a happy medium?Yes, there is, thanks to Android dev Curtis Laudenslayer (aka ibCurlyFry). Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Unobtrusive Popups in Apps with ibPopupLaudenslayer's new app is called ibPopup, which lets you view your notification in a full screen application, dismiss it easily, and even reply to it without ever leaving your current app. This app is not in the Google Play Store, so in order to install it, you'll need to enable Unknown sources in your device settings.

How to Enable Unknown SourcesSince this is an .apk file, we'll need to enable Unknown sources, which can be done by going to Settings -> Security -> Device administration, and checking the box next to Unknown sources. Hit OK to enable it. Images via wonderhowto.com Now your device will allow the installation of apps downloaded from outside of the Google Play Store.

How to Get ibPopupNow, go ahead and download and install the latest .apk file using this Dropbox link, or via the original XDA post.

How to Activate ibPopupAfter opening up the application, you'll be taken to the main menu. By default, ibPopup will be turned off. In order to turn it on, you'll need to first activate it in the Services section.Go to Settings -> Accessibility -> Services and enable ibPopup. You should also disable any other services to avoid any overlap or malfunctions.

How to Set Up ibPopupIn the main menu, you can access the app settings and adjust the size of the text and position of the displayed notification. You can also test your changes by hitting the Test Popup tab at the bottom of the screen. I also wen it an immediately tested it in Candy Crush, and it worked great. Image via wonderhowto.com

Known Bugs: Sizing IssuesThere are a couple issues to note. When using the app, you may run into some resizing issues. Either the application becomes very small, like so... Image via wonderhowto.com Or, when flipped horizontally, the application stacks on itself and the menu screen becomes virtually unusable.

Known Bugs: Replying IssuesAlso, when replying to a message from the popup window you may notice that the compose window is blocked by the notification. And when you try to send the message by tapping the send icon, nothing happens. In order to send a message successfully, you need to enable Enter to Send in the main menu. Now, even though your message is somewhat blocked, you can still reply and send without ever leaving your current application.
Other Known BugsWhen using the "Press Enter to Send" option, a new line is shown when enter is pressed, though the blank line is not actually sent in the message. When two texts are received within half a second, the second text may not display correctly. Screens with different resolution/size will cause the popup to have a different size/location. It can only handle texts from up to 5 different people. Unable to scroll through large texts. Time sometimes displays incorrectly. Compose window displays differently on full screen. These issues cannot currently be fixed due to the developer's user of Tasker to create the app and the compatibility issues that comes with it, but he's working hard on making it the best he can.
Overall...It's still a really good app for receiving and replying to messages without leaving your Candy Crush progress, because Candy Crush has been known to end games in progress when reentering the app. This helps stop that from happening, which is a plus in my book.

Coinbase 101: How to Refer Friends & Family to Earn Bonuses

Coinbase 101: How to Refer Friends & Family to Earn Bonuses
Every dollar that comes your way is a blessing, especially when it comes to trading in the volatile world of bitcoins. Thankfully, Coinbase rewards you for sending much valued customers their way, giving you more money to feed your cryptocurrency trading needs.Coinbase has a rewards program that pays you every time someone signs up with the popular exchange through your referral, so if you hadn't already taken advantage of this nifty program, it's never too late to start sharing. And with so many people joining Coinbase lately, you might as well take advantage of the influx of new users and earn a little money to bolster your funds.Don't Miss: Transfer Bitcoin, Ether & More from Coinbase to Binance Best of all, sharing Coinbase with friends and family is incredibly easy using your favorite browser on Android, iPhone, Mac, or PC. It's worth noting that while this feature can be found within the Coinbase app for Android, it tends to send out a link to the Google Play Store, which wouldn't be ideal if you're sharing with someone using an iPhone. So we recommend going through your web browser to help ensure you snag all potential referrals.
Referral Rewards & LimitationsCoinbase rewards you with a commission of $10 worth of BTC every time someone new signs up for an account using the referral link that you've shared and completes either a buy or sell order amounting to at least $100 of BTC, BCC, ETH, and LTC within 180 days of creating his or her account. In addition to this, your referral also gets the same bonus once he or she completes a cryptocurrency purchase or sale amounting to at least $100 within the same 180-day timeframe.A great aspect of this program is that your referral doesn't have to buy or sell $100 or more in cryptocurrencies in one go — as long you as your referral's transactions tally up to at least $100 within 180 days, both of you will earn the $10 bonus. Keep in mind, however, that trades can take up to four business days to complete. So if your referral's trade is performed on day 178 and completes on day 182, neither of you may receive a reward.

Referring a Friend or Family MemberTo invite friends, family, and others to sign up for Coinbase using your referral code, sign into Coinbase using the browser on your iPhone, Android, Mac, or PC. From there, click the avatar button in the upper-right corner of the screen, then choose "Invite Friends." Within the invite page, you now have the option of sharing your Coinbase referral link either through email, social media, or copying your personal link to share with friends via text messages (iOS). Choosing either Facebook or Twitter will generate a ready-made post which you can instantly share on your feed for people to view, while invites sent via email or messaging will share your direct referral link. Once you've sent out your invites, all the receiver needs to do is open the link you shared, which will then take them directly to Coinbase. From there, they'll just need to tap on the hamburger menu button ion the upper-right corner to open the menu page, then select "Sign Up" to register with Coinbase. To play it safe, make sure to tell your friends and family to sign up using the browser if they're using a smartphone, as it's currently unknown if your referral code will go through if they download the app and register an account from there. Once your referrals have successfully registered on Coinbase, deposited funds, and have started trading in BTC, LTC, BCC, and ETH, simply sit back and wait until they reach a total amount of at least $100 in trades for both of you to receive your bonuses. Just be sure to remind them to execute those trades within 180 days.Don't Miss: More Coinbase Tips & Tricks for all Your Cryptocurrency NeedsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Access & Organize Your Contacts from Any Screen on Android

How To: Access & Organize Your Contacts from Any Screen on Android
Contacts on your phone can be messy. Keeping all of those numbers, emails, and addresses organized takes time and, even then, they still may not be be as accessible as you want them to be.Drupe, an application currently in beta for Android, drastically improves the native way of going through your contacts. Use Drupe to access contacts from anywhere on your device, organized neatly and ready for you to interact with, not only through phone calls and text messages, but also for Facebook, Skype, WhatsApp, and other apps. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Get Early Access to DrupeUsing the Google account that's attached to your Android device, sign up to get early access to the beta version of Drupe directly from their website. I received an email the next day, granting me access to the app. Through the email, you'll see a link where you can log in as a tester and download Drupe onto your device.

Step 2: Use Drupe to Access ContactsWhen you open Drupe, you'll be taken through a short tutorial and asked to grant notification access, which you'll need to do so that the app can properly access your contacts and associated apps. On the side of the screen, towards the middle, is where you'll find the "Drupe trickle," a set of four points that you swipe to access Drupe.Perform a swipe from the left and you'll see your Favorite contacts on the left side, with some of your communication apps on the right, including Phone, Messages, Email, Facebook Messenger, Maps, and more.Drupe will then pick a few of the contacts you interact with the most and place them against the left side of the screen. If your address book is messy, this will help to organize it by allowing you to look through your contacts without any duplicates to deal with. Drag a contact icon over to the app which you want to communicate with. If you drag the contact over the Phone icon, it will call them. Drag a contact over the Messages icon and it will text them. Additionally, you can place a contact over something like the Maps icon and you will be taken to your map application of choice, with directions to your contact's address. Swipe right inside of Drupe to access recent contacts. Use the search bar at the bottom of the screen to look through all of your contacts. You can also add Drupe on your lock screen, as either the "Drupe trickle," small contact icons, or large icons.

Step 3: Adjust SettingsIn the settings page, you can change the default label that shows up when you open Drupe (Favorites or Recent), how you want the "Drupe trickle" to show up on your lock screen, and you can also check out a couple of experimental features, including one that makes it easier to use Drupe with one hand. After using Drupe for a while now, I can say with certainty that it vastly improved the way I access my contacts. Instead of having to go to a handful of applications to get things done, I can instead quickly text a friend, schedule a meeting for work, get directions to a family member's house, and call my girlfriend, all through Drupe.Does Drupe enhance the way you use your contacts? Let us know in the comments below, and check out more Android tips and tricks over on our Facebook, Google+, and Twitter.

News: Save Data on Hulu by Choosing the Right Streaming Quality
It seems almost every carrier now has an unlimited data plan, and free Wi-Fi is now available in more places than ever before. If you want to be connected, it has never been easier — but that still doesn't mean that everyone can stream as much as they please. Many of us don't have an unlimited mobile data plan. Some of us are stuck with monthly limits or are trapped in areas without access to Wi-Fi. We deserve to stream on-the-go as much as anyone else! So what are we to do?Well, if you want to get your Hulu fix wherever you are, you'll need to learn how to manage your video quality. You don't want to give yourself a crazy data bill at the end of the month, so using as little data as possible when streaming is key.To make sure you're conserving your data while streaming Hulu, follow the steps below.Don't Miss: Pick the Hulu Plan That's Right for You
Method 1: Adjusting Video Quality on AndroidOn Android, start by tapping the display while streaming any video in the Hulu app. From there, you'll find your video quality settings by tapping the gear icon in the top right-hand corner. The following options will then be presented on the left side on the screen:AutoAuto is not recommended for anyone looking to conserve cellular data. When Auto is selected, Hulu will change your video quality depending on the strength of your cellular connection. The stronger your cellular connection, the higher the quality will be, which means Hulu will use more of your data. For those focused on uninterrupted streaming experiences, Auto might be the way to go. Rather than stopping to buffer, Hulu will drop the video quality, so you can keep streaming. This is a bad method for any quality-purists out there, but there are some who prefer the binge-sessions to go uninterrupted, no matter what.LowIf you're trying to limit your data use while streaming, low is the way to go. Hulu will stream your video in the lowest quality possible.Your video stream won't look great, but at least your cell phone bill will thank you.MediumMedium is exactly what it sounds like — Hulu will set the video quality somewhere between its lowest and highest settings. Hulu isn't very clear what resolution or stream size "medium" means, so we can't completely recommend it as an option to those looking to save on data. But if you're a conservationist who also can't stand the poor quality of the "low" setting, you might find a happy medium here.HighHigh is completely unrecommended for those with limited data plans. Hulu will stream your content in as high quality as possible, putting a strain on your data plan. Hulu provides no information on how much data will actually be used by these settings. This article from 2014 claims that streaming in HD will take up 650 MB per hour, but there's no way to corroborate that figure. To be safe, data-savers, stay away.If you have an unlimited plan, you still might want to opt out of the highest video quality. Depending on your network speed, Hulu may have to pause the stream to keep up with the quality. Give it a go, but you may find your viewing of The Handmaiden's Tale not to be as smooth as you'd like.Don't Miss: Hulu 101: How to Cast Shows & Movies to Your TV

Method 2: Adjusting Video Quality on iOSHulu hasn't been kind to Apple when it comes to data management. If you're on an iPhone, you'll find you have far fewer options to manipulate your video quality. To find these options, tap the display while streaming a video in the Hulu app, then tap the gear icon in the bottom-left corner of the display.Let's run through what you do get:AutoLike Android, you get an Auto setting. Don't use this if you're looking to conserve data, or if you're looking for a steady video quality throughout your streaming experience.SDSD = standard definition. Again, Hulu doesn't offer much in the way of specific numbers, so I can't say for sure what this video quality truly is. But I think it's safe to say the quality is somewhere comparable to Android's low or medium settings. I mean, who would consider 480p or less high quality?Unfortunately, those are the only two video quality options to choose from. It doesn't make sense to me.I've tried both Auto and SD, and, honestly, I can't tell the difference. If Hulu only offers one video quality to its iPhone customers, that's pretty disappointing. To be safe, I'd still stick to SD over Auto while on cellular. At least then you know Hulu won't be increasing your quality without your knowledge.Disable Playback Over CellularOne thing Apple has over Android is the ability to disable cellular playback in Hulu altogether. Just go to Settings -> Hulu and disable the switch next to "Cellular Data," then your Hulu app will no longer be able to stream videos while you're connected to mobile data. Fret not, however, because you can still stream all you want while on Wi-Fi. Those with unlimited plans need only worry about the speed of their network, so their stream is a healthy balance of high quality and smooth playback. But for us with added limitations, we need the methods listed above. Follow them, and hopefully, you can make it out of your billing cycle unscathed.Don't Miss: All of Our Hulu 101 TutorialsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: 19 Tips for Making the Most of the Health App on Your iPhone

How To: 19 Tips for Making the Most of the Health App on Your iPhone

It's not easy staying fit and healthy these days with addicting phones, oversized portions, and long workdays, to name just a few things. To succeed, it takes work, commitment, and an understanding of your mind and body — and your iPhone can help you with some of that. While Apple pushed its Screen Time tool to help curb unhealthy smartphone habits, its "Health" app can help with everything else.If you've never used the Health app, it could seem confusing when you first open it, and that's partly because there's so much information it can house. But don't let that deter you from going any further. The Health app is full of useful health and fitness-tracking features to make sure you can stick to goals and be as healthy as you can be, whether you want to lose a little weight, stop snacking, destress your life, get better sleep, improve your overall physical fitness, or take care of your heart.Don't Miss: See How Much Weight MyFitnessPal Can Help You Lose Check out our favorite tips for using Apple Health on your iPhone below to see exactly what you can do with this tool. If you're new to the app, make sure to read them all. And if you've been using the app for some time, you'll still probably find a few useful features you didn't know about.

Tip 1: Import Health DataIf you're someone who needs easy access to your medical records, this tip's for you. Apple implemented a system back in iOS 11.3 so users could import their health data from a healthcare provider. There are over 70 locations compatible with this feature, so you might be able to use your iPhone to pull up relevant health information such as immunizations, allergies, medications, blood pressure, hospital visits, and other details, which could help you better follow your overall health goals.Full Instructions: How to Import Your Health Records onto Your iPhone Images by Justin Meyers/Gadget Hacks

Tip 2: Set a Medical ID on the Lock ScreenMedical emergencies happen, and if they happen to you, it's best to be prepared. Your iPhone can offer life-saving information to first responders and medical professionals, even if you aren't able to, right from your lock screen. You just need to set it up. Your "Medical ID" can display valuable health data such as blood type, age, weight, medical conditions, medicines, allergies, and more. If you aren't able to speak for yourself, your iPhone can speak for you if you let it.Full Instructions: How to Add an Emergency Medical Card to Your Lock Screen

Tip 3: Find Apps to Integrate into HealthAs you'll see throughout this article, Health is an app that will let you manually enter as much data as you possibly can. However, why enter that data yourself when you could use an app to do it for you? There are many apps that work with Health to automatically enter health and fitness data such as sleep, nutrition, exercise, and calorie burn statistics. All you need to do is install them and set them up.In Health, tap the "Health Data" tab. You'll be greeted by four pillars — "Activity," "Mindfulness," "Nutrition," and "Sleep," alongside a list of subcategories at the bottom of the page. Each has its own set of recommended apps that will automatically add your relevant health data to the corresponding pillar when used. The only exception here is "Health Records." For example, check out the "Activity" tab. If you scroll down, you'll find a list of 20 titles under "Recommended Apps." Each is a fitness app of some kind that, as you use it to track your exercise, will add data automatically to Health, specifically to this "Activity" tab.

Tip 4: See Which Apps Have Access to Health DataThere are a lot of sources entering data into Health. If you want to see exactly what your apps have access to in the Health app, tap the "Sources" tab at the bottom of the display. Here, you'll see all apps on your iPhone that are reading data from Health and/or writing data to Health. But that's not all. Tap on each to see exactly what each app has permission to read or write. For example, Sleep Cycle has permission to write data about my heart rate and sleep analysis, as well as has permission to read my step count. You can even see an explanation for why the app wants permission for specific types of data. You can enable or disable permission for each data point individually or make sweeping changes by tapping "Turn All Categories Off" at the top of the page.

Tip 5: Prioritize Your Health Data SourcesHealth pulls data from a lot of sources — your iPhone, wearables, peripheral devices, and apps can all contribute to the information stored in the app. However, only one of these at a time can be used as the definitive source for each health section. Luckily, you get to choose which source that is.In Health, choose a section to focus on. For example, "Active Energy." Then, tap "Data Sources & Access," where you can view all sources of data, and tap "Edit" in the top right. Now, you can use the hamburger icons on the right side of each data source to drag a new source to the top of the list. Health will then prioritize this source and display its data from now on. If you need help deciding on a source to prioritize, just tap on each (outside of the editor). You'll see a complete list of data from that source, allowing you to decide if that should be the definitive source for Health.

Tip 6: Track Your Steps Without a WearableWearables like Fitbit sell themselves as a way to keep track of your steps throughout the day. Take enough steps, and you'll be on your way to a healthier you. But how can you possibly know how many steps you take in a day if you don't own one of these trackers? Easy — just carry your iPhone around with you.Your iPhone tracks your steps all day long, whenever you have it on you, and the data can be viewed in the Health app. Tap the "Today" tab, and you'll find the current day's step count listed under "Activity." Tap it, and you'll have access to your iPhone's entire step count history. Tap D, W, M, or Y to view your step counts for the day, week, month, or year, respectively. Alternatively, you can find "Steps" under "Activity" in the "Health Data" tab. Some wearables, such as the Apple Watch, will sync up their step counts with the Health app as well, so you don't always have to have your iPhone on you. Apple Watch will sync automatically, while third-party trackers will have to have their apps connected to Apple Health, such as Withings. Unfortunately, Fitbit and Misfit, to name a few, have not incorporated Health integration yet, so a middleman app like Sync Solver may be needed.

Tip 7: Track & Monitor Your SleepDid you know your iPhone doubles as a sleep monitor? With the right app, you can track how you sleep, see when you wake up during the night, and even set alarms to try to wake you up in the lightest sleep stage possible. There are also peripheral devices such as Apple Watch and Beddit that can track sleep data and sync it with Health so you don't have to worry about your iPhone battery running out.If using your iPhone only, the default Clock app has a "Bedtime" feature that will sync sleep hours to Health. Third-party apps such as Sleep Cycle can do that too but have other features to benefit from, though HealthKit will only accept data for when you fell asleep, wake-ups during the night, and when you get up.Full Instructions: Track Your Sleep Activity in Apple's Health App for iPhone Apple Watch Deals from Amazon | Apple | Best Buy | Walmart

Tip 8: Track Your Nutrition & Eating HabitsAn integral pillar of health is nutrition. What you eat fuels your body and can be the difference between a productive or sluggish day at the office. Health helps you keep track of the foods you eat, so you can stay on task with any goals you might have.Under Health Data, tap "Nutrition." Right away, the Nutrition page features a short video on the importance of a balanced diet, any nutrition data you might already have from Health or connected third-party apps, plus the usual suite of recommended apps that will integrate their data into the Health app. Scroll down, and you'll find a long list of nutrition data points, such as caffeine, fiber, iron, vitamin C, etc. If you have never entered any nutrition info before, you'll find all possible items listed here. Otherwise, any data points that have been entered will be displayed at the top of the page. You can manually enter data for any of these items by tapping on each, tapping the plus (+) icon in the top right, then filling out the relevant data. Once you do, that item will be brought to the top of the page.

Tip 9: Stay MindfulYour iPhone is an amazing device, but it's not without its flaws. Constant information at our fingertips can erode time to ourselves, to reflect on the day or how we feel. That's where "Mindfulness" in Health comes in. You can use this pillar to start carving out quiet time each day, as well as keeping track of your mindfulness progress as you go.Don't Miss: How to Use Screen Time in iOS 12 to Curb iPhone Addiction When you first open "Mindfulness" from the Health Data tab, you'll be greeted by a short video on the benefits of the pillar. You'll also see any Mindfulness data you may have already entered. If not, that's fine — Health's suite of recommended Mindfulness apps can help you get started below. While Apple is sure to screen all apps it recommends here, undoubtedly the two most popular options are Headspace and Calm. While both promote meditation, ironically, the two have entered a heated competition to become the number one meditation service on the App Store. Both are free to download, so give each a try and decide for yourself.App Store Link: Calm (free) App Store Link: Headspace (free) Once you start and sync up the apps with Health, you'll see meditation data appear on this page in blue. Tap that icon to view all Mindfulness data from that day, week, month, or year. If you use an unsupported app or take time for yourself outside of Health integration, tap the plus (+) icon in the top right to manually add Mindfulness time.

Tip 10: Keep an Eye on Weight ProgressSome of us want to lose weight, some of us need to gain weight. If you have a weight you need to change, Health can keep you on target. Under "Health Data," tap "Body Measurements." If you've previously entered weight data, you'll find it at the top of the screen in orange. Otherwise, tap "Weight" below "No Recorded Data." Here, you can view all weight data that either you've entered into Health or any connected compatible apps and smart scales have added themselves. You can view today's weight, and weight change for the week, month, or year. If you want to manually enter data, tap the plus (+) in the top right, then enter the relevant information. Tap "Add" to enter the new weight. Popular Smart Scales That Sync with Health: Withings Nokia Body | Body+ | Body Cardio | QardioBase 2 | iHealth Lite | iHealth Core | Eufy BodySense
Tip 11: Track Other Body MeasurementsOf course, weight isn't the only metric Health can keep track of for you. Health also allows you to enter information about height, body fat percentage, body mass index, lean body mass, and waist circumference. The process for adding data to these metrics is the same as weight. Of course, if you have any of these data points stored in an app that's connected with Health, you'll see that data here, too.

Tip 12: Customize Your Health FavoritesIf you're tired of jumping all over the place to view specific health data, jump no more. Health lets you add data points to a favorites tab on the main page of the app. That way, you can quickly view the information that's important to you, while ignoring the rest.First, locate the data point you want to add to your favorites. As you can see with Sleep Analysis, "Add to Favorites" appears below the data chart. Tap the slider to ensure the option is enabled, then head back to the "Today" tab to see the item under "Favorites." You'll also see shorter "Favorites" menus for favorited items in their corresponding pillars. Repeat this process for as many data points as you wish.

Tip 13: Keep Track of Reproductive HealthHealth covers a wide array of health needs. If you're someone who needs to keep track of their reproductive health, this app has you covered. Just tap the "Health Data" tab, then select "Reproductive Health" from the list. Here, you can add any relevant data, the same as you would in other Health sections described above, or install, use, and sync any recommended apps that will post data here on your behalf.

Tip 14: Export Your Health DataJust because Health is an excellent way to store your health data doesn't mean that information has to be stuck there. Health has a tool that will allow you to export your data off-app, to share with friends, medical professionals, or just to store elsewhere. It's your data — you should do what you want with it.To export your health data, tap the profile icon in the top right of "Today." Next, tap "Export Health Data" at the bottom of the page. Select "Export" on the following popup to proceed. Once Health finishes exporting your data, the share sheet will pop up. Just choose your data's destination here, and you're done. The exported data from Apple Health is in XML format, which is not very user-friendly since it can't be read in normal charts or anything without first being converted. You can use QS Access to convert the XML file into a CSV that can be read by most spreadsheet apps, including Apple Numbers. If you're a more technical person, you can also use Python to convert the file into a more readable format.

Tip 15: Check High Heart Rate History (Apple Watch Only)Your Apple Watch checks your heart rate throughout the day. If it detects your heart rate is too high, you'll receive an alert warning you as such. What does this alert mean, and what should you do about it?We cover those answers and more in our full guide. However, in addition to learning more about these notifications, the Health app makes it easy to check your high heart rate notification history. Whether you want to revisit a single alert or track your alerts over a set period of time, Health has that data.Full Instructions: What the High Heart Rate Warning Means on Apple Watch Image by Jake Peterson/Gadget Hacks

Tip 16: Check Low Heart Rate History (Apple Watch Only)On the flip side, your Apple Watch also checks for heart rates that are too low. Any time it does, it saves the notification in Health. You can use the app to refer to at any and all low heart rate notifications you've received. Take a look at our full guide to learn more about these notifications and how you can access a full history of them in Health.Full Instructions: What to Do When You Get a Low Heart Rate Notification Image by Jake Peterson/Gadget Hacks

Tip 17: Check Irregular Heart Rate History (Apple Watch Only)Finally, your Apple Watch now checks for irregular heart rate as you wear it; This can be a serious issue, and with the help of an Apple Watch, it can be detected in people who otherwise would never have known they had the condition. The Apple Watch isn't a medical device, so it cannot be used to diagnose heart conditions of any kind. However, it can be a helpful tool in learning more about your heart and pointing you in a healthier direction. Check out our full guide for all your need to know about AFib notifications on your Apple Watch, as well as how to view those notifications in Health.Full Instructions: What the Irregular Heart Rhythm Alert Means on Apple Watch Image by Jake Peterson/Gadget Hacks

Tip 18: Cheat Your Apple Watch Rings (Apple Watch Only)Your Apple Watch rings are meant to motivate you to stay active through each and every day. Of course, sometimes, completing all three rings just isn't an option. If you're sick, traveling, or just plain lazy, losing a streak or a competition can feel like a humiliation. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty, your Apple Watch rings can be pretty easily tricked. Not only can you make minor adjustments to your sedentary lifestyle to convince the watch you're actually moving, you can manually enter exercise and calorie information to give your rings a boost. Your friends will never see it coming.Full Instructions: How to Cheat Your Apple Watch Rings

Tip 19: Calculate Total Calorie Burn for the Day (Apple Watch Only)Apple Watch owners are familiar with the Move ring — it represents a calorie burn goal that users try to hit each day. However, this number simply can't be your day's overall calorie burn. If the average adult burns 2,000 calories a day, and your Move goal is 450 calories, where are the rest of those calories?Interestingly, you'll find your answer in Health. It might not be a perfect system, but it's the way us Apple Watch users need to roll. However, there is a better way to do it using the Activity app for iPhone.Full Instructions: How to Figure Out Your Total Calorie Burn This article was produced during Gadget Hacks' annual Health & Fitness special coverage.
