How To: Root Android Oreo on the Nexus 5X & 6P
The first developer preview of Android Oreo 8.0 was only out for a couple of days before Chainfire created a new root method for it. For the time being, only the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P are supported by this first SuperSU ZIP, as the Pixel's dual-partition layout has created some hurdles, though Chainfire is surely working on overcoming those at some point soon. This root method is still in its earliest stages of development, so you should expect a few bugs here and there. Despite the lack of major visual changes in Android Oreo, behind-the-scenes tweaks have slightly changed the way rooting will work. SELinux rules have been tightened some more, and kernel changes have posed some problems. But, if you're a tinkerer and you're running Android 8.0 as your daily driver, then rooting your phone is a must, so we'll cover the process below.Don't Miss: Install Android Oreo on Your Pixel or Nexus Right Now

When you're done, go ahead and reboot your phone. If you need more help flashing the TWRP image with Fastboot, we've covered the process in detail at the following link. While the guide mainly deals with flashing factory images provided by the manufacturer, the same principles apply to flashing the TWRP image file.Don't Miss: How to Flash Images Using Fastboot

Step 2: Download SuperSUNow you'll need to download SuperSU on your Nexus 5X or 6P. The latest version of SuperSU takes care of a couple of bugs that managed to sneak into the first release of SuperSU for Android 8.0, so only one download is needed now. Big thanks to our own member Noah Alvarez for pointing this out to us. He's also gone ahead and tested this version of SuperSU with the latest/official release of Android Oreo, and it works there too!Download SuperSU v2.82 SR3 for Android Oreo 8.0 (.zip)

Step 3: Reboot to TWRP & Flash SuperSUNext, reboot to TWRP by powering your phone off, then pressing and holding the volume down and power keys for five seconds. From there, press the volume down button twice to highlight the "Recovery Mode" option, then tap the power button to select it.When TWRP boots up, tap "Install," then navigate to the Download folder and select the previously downloaded SuperSU ZIP. Then, swipe to confirm the installation, and when that's finished, tap on Reboot System and wait for Android to boot up (it might take a couple of minutes for the first boot with root). After your phone has turned back on, make sure SuperSU is in the app drawer.Be sure to let us know about your experience rooting Android Oreo, and remember that some root apps might be buggy until the developers are able to give them an update.Don't Miss: 25 Cool New Features & Changes Coming in Android OreoFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

Theming is one of the many facets of Android that gives it a leg up on its iOS competition. Step 1: Install the AppNotify BETA, from developer Skytek65, is a new concept on an old feature. With a visually-appealing circular animation that expands to expose your notification and app icon towards the top portion of your display, this dynamic new design themes the notification to match colors with the originating app.Install Notify BETA from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Set It UpBefore setting up the app, for those of you running Android 5.0 or above, you will also need to install HeadsOff, which is required to toggle off heads-up notifications and run Notify as smoothly as possible. Once you're ready to run the app, launch it and enable Notification access.

Step 3: Try It OutAs an application in the beta stage, there aren't any preferences to set up as of now, so feel free to give the dev some feedback and maybe you'll see your suggestions in its next release. For now, try it out and enjoy it. You may experience some glitches at times, but overall, the application works very well and gave me something cool to look at. I can see the potential in Notify and hope the developer implements some preferences, like blacklisting, to maximize the experience.Follow Android Hacks over on Facebook and Twitter, or Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter, for more Android tips.

How To: This Energy-Saving Live Wallpaper Gives Your Android Home Screen a Fresh Look Whenever You Want

If you're not acquainted with 500px, you should be. One of the more preeminent photography communities out there, 500px takes you through a journey of incredible shots—anything from nature and urban explorations to cities and architecture to the abstract. Image via 500px.org Whatever your preference is, you can be sure to find it on 500px.Now, you don't even need to browse their wonderful collection of pictures, because you can enjoy them directly on your Samsung Galaxy Note 2, Note 3, or other Android device all of the time as a live rotating wallpaper of never-ending 500px photos. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

500 Firepaper by ChainfireFrom popular Android developer Chainfire—who's created applications such as SuperSU and CF-Auto-Root—500 Firepaper (available on Google Play) turns all of your favorite photographs from 500px into a live wallpaper, rotating through them at customizable intervals throughout the day, insuring your device never gets too boring to look at. Image via wonderhowto.com There are similar rotating live wallpaper apps out there, but Chainfire designed this one because he "didn't really feel like trusting somebody else...without draining [his] battery when [he'd] need it most or raking up the data charges", so hopefully that means this live wallpaper shouldn't be as battery-draining as others.

500 Firepaper PreferencesOnce the application is downloaded, you can manage the plethora of settings to your liking. Some of these settings include the following. Featured (Popular, Upcoming, Editor's choice, etc.) Categories (Animals, Street, Fine Art, Sport, Film, etc.) Update only over Wi-Fi Update interval Brightness (to save battery) Grayscale (to save battery) Parallax effect Wallpaper controls Daydream configurations Much more

Setting Up Your FirepaperNow that all of your preferences are set, you're ready to set 500 Firepaper as your background. To do this, head over to your home screen and hold your finger down on any blank space. This will bring up a popup, and from there, select Set wallpaper -> Home Screen -> Live wallpapers and choose 500 Firepaper from the list and tap on Select wallpaper.

Managing Your Homescreen's Firepaper500 Firepaper should now be on your home screen, with the first set of pictures loaded as your background. Depending on how you set the interval change, you should see a change in pictures anywhere from a few minutes to several hours. If you don't like any of the pictures, you can easily triple-tap on a blank space on your home screen and the picture will change, which is easily my favorite feature.

Setting the DaydreamIf you have Daydream on, you can integrate 500 Firepaper with it. To do this, head over to Settings -> Device -> Display -> Daydream and select 500 Firepaper from the options. Now, anytime you go into Daydream mode (which can be started automatically, set at a specific time, or triggered anytime the phone is docked or charging), your screen will fill with your preferred photographs. To exit, just press back.

How To: Make an AR Emoji with the Galaxy S9

How To: Make an AR Emoji with the Galaxy S9
Apple's Animoji on the iPhone X might allow you to use your own facial movements to control your favorite emoji, but Samsung is looking to make you the focus of the interactive icon with the introduction of AR Emoji. Instead of a dragon or an alien, Samsung wants your unique look to define your avatar.AR Emoji utilizes the Galaxy S9's front-facing camera to map your face, just like the iPhone X. However, on the S9, the focus is on a personalized experience. They might look a little odd at first, but these AR Emoji are 100% yours, since each uses a photo of your own face in order to make one.

Step 1: Take a SelfieTo begin, open the camera on your S9, then go to "AR Emoji" on the slider selection at the top of the display. Tap "ALLOW" on the pop-up to grant access and launch the emoji-creator. Simply frame your face in the cut-out on the display, smiling without opening your lips, then tap the shutter button to snap a photo, just like taking a selfie. For best results, Samsung recommends you remove any glasses and keep your hair out of the frame. Once you've taken a photo, select either "Male" or "Female," then tap "Next."

Step 2: Customize Your New AR EmojiOnce you tap "Next," your S9 will begin creating your AR Emoji. When it's finished, you'll be able to adjust your character in a variety of ways. Immediately, Samsung gives you the option to adjust your AR Emoji's skin tone via the slider underneath your AR Emoji, but you can tap any of the other three icons on the bottom of the display to access further controls. Tap the hair icon to choose between different hairstyles and options. You can choose skin tones in this view as well. The glasses icon will give you an array of glasses types (although you can choose not to use glasses, of course). Finally, the t-shirt icon opens up a drawer full of outfits to try out.Once you're satisfied with your AR Emoji, tap "OK." A notification will appear, alerting you that your Emoji will be available as a sticker in your keyboard. If you don't want your AR Emoji saved as a sticker, tap the (X) in the top-right corner. Otherwise, tap "OK."

Step 3: Try Out Your New AR EmojiYour S9 will launch the camera again, but this time, you'll see your AR Emoji on the screen. Tap it, and it will replace you in the camera feed, mirroring you just as you'd expect with Animoji on iPhone X. Move around, make different faces, and your AR Emoji will follow suit. You can snap a photo or take a video like you normally would in selfie mode to capture your AR Emoji in all its glory. You can easily switch back to a normal camera view by tapping a different camera setting at the top of the display. Samsung has big plans for this new Galaxy S9 feature, and currently includes 18 animated stickers that will feature your AR Emoji, akin to Bitmojis, which will work with third-party apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. You can even share your AR Emojis with friends and family that don't have an S9, or even a Samsung device at all.Don't Miss: How to Add Mickey Mouse & Other Custom AR Emojis to Your Galaxy S9Follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Make Your Volume Buttons Control Media Volume by Default, Not Ringtones

How To: Make Your Volume Buttons Control Media Volume by Default, Not Ringtones
The volume buttons on the side of most Android devices—also known as the volume rocker—make it easy to adjust sound output without having to dig around in any settings menus. But the trouble is, they control notification and ringtone volume by default, and will only adjust media volume after a song or video has started playing.A lot of people set their ringtone volume at a certain level and never have the need to adjust it, and others use automation apps like Tasker to set their ringtone volume based on location. So if you'd rather have the volume rocker control media volume by default to avoid getting caught off guard by a blaring video link, a simple app from developer Tom W has you covered, and it doesn't even require root access.Don't Miss: 9 Alternative Uses for Your Android's Volume Keys

Step 1: Install Rocker LockerThe app that makes this all possible is called Rocker Locker, and it's available for free on the Google Play Store for devices running Android KitKat and higher (4.0.3+). So to begin, search it by name to get it installed, or head directly to the install page at the following link.Install Rocker Locker for free from the Google Play Store

Step 2: Enable the ServiceUsing Rocker Locker is incredibly simple—if you want your volume rocker to control media volume by default, simply tap the "Enable" button in the app's main menu. When this button turns blue, you're all set to go—and the app will even start automatically any time you boot your phone, so you can just set it and forget it.

Step 3: Control Media Volume with Your Volume RockerWith the Rocker Locker service enabled, any time you press your device's volume buttons, you'll be able to adjust media volume without waiting on a song or video to start playing. Where the notification adjustment menu used to pop up, you'll now see a menu for adjusting media volume instead. Top: Before; Bottom: After I personally wish Android's volume menu behaved this way by default. What about you? How To: Install the New KitKat 4.4.3 Dialer on Your HTC One

How To: Install the New KitKat 4.4.3 Dialer on Your HTC One
Having an open-source platform like Android is great, allowing manufacturers and developers the ability to make their own skins and apps to truly customize the end-user experience. The only downside is that when an update comes to vanilla Android, many of us are left in the cold, unless you have a Google Play Edition HTC One.Google recently updated its official Dialer app with their Android 4.4.3 update, and with it came a new blue theme, along with the already present location search. Usually we would have to wait until Google published it through the Play Store, but I'm not the patient type, so let's install it ourselves. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted HTC One (M7 or M8) or any other Android 4.4.2+ device. A file explorer with root capabilities (like ES File Explorer). QuickShortcutMaker, or any other app that can create activity shortcuts. Installation from "Unknown sources" enabled.

Step 1: Download the Dialer AppTo get started, we will first need to download the Dialer APK, so hit the link below on your device to download it directly.com.google.android.dialer-1.1.apk

Step 2: Installing the APKBefore installing the Dialer through the normal package installer, you will need to push it to the priv-app folder. So open up your file explorer and move com.google.android.dialer-1.1.apk to System/priv-app/. You will also need to change its permissions to rw-r-r by selecting the .apk and editing the properties. Once you've changed the permissions, hit refresh, then tap the app to install it like any other. After it's installed, reboot your One.

Step 3: Creating a Home Screen IconNormally we would be done, but in this case, we have one more thing to do. You may have noticed that after the install, there was no Phone icon placed in your app drawer—this is where QuickShortcutMaker comes in. With it, we will make a home screen shortcut to the Dialer and bypass the need for an app drawer icon.Open the app and select Google Dialer from the Activities section. From the drop-down menu, select the icon that has com.google.android.dialer/com/android.dialer.DialtactsActivity next to it, then tap Create to make your shortcut. Now you're good to go. You're Doing It Wrong: 3 Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Phone's Battery

You're Doing It Wrong: 3 Bad Habits That Are Ruining Your Phone's Battery

I was in college, and my 15-inch Sony Vaio laptop was my prized possession. It was my first PC and probably the most important thing I brought with me to my dorm — it was both how I completed my assignments and my primary source of entertainment. How could it turn its back on me in my time of need?During my freshman year, I was working on a report for a group project due the next morning. About halfway into the research paper, I saw my battery percentage dip to 15 percent. I had only been using my laptop for about an hour and a half, so I was surprised as to how quickly it needed to be recharged. I frantically search my bag and to my dismay, I forgot my AC adapter. With no USB drive (and cloud storage not widely available back then), I was forced to complete my paper on my dying laptop.I started by dropping the brightness level down to barely visible and changing Windows' power levels to balanced. With these adjustments, I was able to eke out 20 more minutes before my laptop shut off from the low battery. I didn't get that paper on time, resulting in a C+ after the late submission penalty. At the end of the day, my laptop's crappy battery was my own fault. Out of the box, my laptop could hold a charge for about five hours — but in six months, that was reduced to less than two. Initially, I was hesitant to use it on the charger, but as the battery life continued to dwindle, it became necessary. While this drop surprised me, a quick search revealed this was common with lithium-ion batteries, and my options were to either buy a new battery or bear with it. I bought a new battery, which gave out just as fast.Don't Miss: Why the iPhone X & Higher Need a $25 Cable to Fast Charge Unfortunately, this wasn't my only time with battery issues. While I did learn from the situation, I didn't learn everything, settling for obvious conclusions instead of digging deeper. At the time, I still believed shorter battery life was routine and not something that could be prevented. As such, I experienced the same sharp drop in battery life on each smartphone I ever owned until my current device.Over the years, I've heard so many conflicting reports of the best practices for charging a battery. Things like overnight charging can be dangerous and avoid a full discharge were countered with reports stating there is no harm in charging past 100% and draining your phone to 0% is recommended, leading me to believe the research behind it all was simply inconclusive. In researching this article, I learned I'm not the only one who felt that way.We asked readers on Twitter what their worst charging habit was and overnight charging led the way with 55% of the results. However, from talking to individual respondents, it appears many people were like me and confused about which charging habits are actually bad for your battery. But here's the thing — the research is conclusive. There's a right way and a wrong way to manage your battery.Especially now, proper management of our batteries is vital. Each year, OEMs are tasked with creating new, more powerful smartphones that also have amazing battery life. In previous years, phones would come with larger batteries relative to their screen size, but since consumers want thinner phones, the idea of a larger battery becomes more and more implausible. While chargers and batteries over the years have become smarter, the proliferation of fast charging leads to additional problems thanks to the extra heat they generate over slow chargers. As a result, it exacerbates many bad habits regarding poor battery mismanagement. And since swappable batteries are a thing of the past (thanks to consumers asking for water resistance), once your battery dies, replacing it is a lot harder and more expensive. Image by Gadget Hacks/Twitter

Bad Habit #1: Overnight ChargingOften with my laptop, I would watch videos and do homework late into the night, eking out what little battery I had left to accomplish whatever task I had. Afterward, I would plug it into the charger and go to sleep for the night to wake up to a full charge — but I never stopped to think about what happens to the battery overnight after it hits 100%.Even back then, without fast charging, it didn't take eight hours to fully charge a battery. But since a battery can only receive so much power, how does it remain fully charged without overcharging?Lithium-ion batteries consist of three main components: A cathode, an anode, and an electrolyte. Electrons (negative ions) move between the cathode (which is a positive electrode) and anode (which is a negative electrode) through the electrolyte during charging and discharging. Specifically for charging, electrons move from the cathode to the anode. During this process, the battery communicates with the charger about the highest (and safest) voltage level it can receive. This determines the beginning charging level.
As described by Battery University, during what's known as Stage 1, the voltage rises until it hits this accepted amount. While increasing, the current begins flowing to the battery at its highest level for a constant rate. Until the voltage nears its limit, this rate of current doesn't decrease. These parameters typically occur up to 50% charge, and this is the basic premise of how fast charging works.Stage 2 is when the voltage nears the limit and switches to saturation charge, a much slower rise in the voltage. This time, the current continues to flow to the battery at a decreasing rate. Stage 2 ends when the current is less than 3% of its original rate and the voltage is at its limit, which also indicates the battery is fully charged. At this time, the voltages decreases and charging stops. Image by Linus Tech Tips/YouTube Whether fast charging or slow charging, lithium-ion batteries in devices like my laptop or your smartphone hit this stage well before eight hours. Since smartphones are always connected to the internet, they continue consuming battery when the screen is off, even while charging. To keep your phone at 100% while it's still attached to the wall outlet, your charger "tops off" the battery. When the battery level begins to dip, the charger will raise the voltage and allow current to flow to the battery at a decreasing rate. At full charge, the system ends the process of charging again and the voltage decreases. It is due to this "topping off" feature that overnight charging isn't recommended. As you may have noticed, when you use your phone while charging, it becomes quite hot. The same occurs while topping off overnight. Heat is lithium-ion batteries' kryptonite — it stresses the battery, causing it to reduce the maximum amount of energy it can store (known as its battery capacity) and compromises its integrity, which can lead to exploding devices. The impact of heat on the battery is alarmingly high. Battery University demonstrated this by holding batteries at the same percentage for one year, stored at various temperatures. After a year, the reduction in capacity was measured. At 77°F (25°C), the battery capacity reduced by 20%, meaning the maximum amount of energy the battery could store was now 80% of its original capacity. Another set of batteries were stored at 104°F (40°C) — these saw a reduction of 35%.For perspective, the operating temperature during fast charging can get as high as 113°F. Image via Battery University Additionally, batteries experience stress while maintaining a 100% charge. In the same test previously mentioned, another group of batteries was held at similar temperatures, but at a 40% charge. Under the same parameters, 77°F reduced the battery capacity by 4%, compared to a charge reduction of 20% when the test was performed at 100% charge. This pattern held true for other temperature ranges, demonstrating that the act of maintaining a charge overnight at any temperature can degrade battery capacity. While we're on the subject of heat, I'd like to touch on wireless charging. Standards such as Qi or PMA allow you to charge your phone on a mat without plugging it in, but the process of wireless charging in general isn't as energy efficient as wired charging. Loss of energy translates to heat, which has the same effect that the "topping off" feature has during overnight charging. Therefore, it's best to avoid wireless charging if you can, but at the very least, don't keep your phone on the charging pad long after it hits 100 percent.

Bad Habit #2: Running Your Battery DryWhile many of us will charge our phones before they dip below 15%, there are times when we need to push our device a little more. I remember a few times in college where I took my laptop out of my dorm without the charger and was forced to push it to zero to finish some homework. What I didn't know was that this was hurting my battery life.In 2013, there were a few articles citing that lithium-ion batteries had something known as a "memory effect." This was said to stem from users performing partial charges (charging your battery from a starting point other than 0%). The battery purportedly "remembers" the shortened cycle and reduces the capacity based on this amount. To restore your capacity, you'd need to fully discharge your battery (go from 100% to 0%) so that your battery would remember its full capacity. As it turns out, this isn't true — you certainly don't need to drain your phone's battery. "Memory effect" affects nickel-cadmium batteries, a different type of battery that is found in older laptops. Lithium-ion doesn't benefit from the practice of fully discharging the battery but rather is hindered because of this action.
Each time you discharge a battery completely, you increase the chance of mechanical degradation of the cathode. If this occurs, its ability to store energy becomes compromised and results in much lower battery life for your device.Additionally, when you drain the battery to zero, you're also increasing the depth of discharge. The depth of discharge is the difference between the starting battery percentage and ending battery percentage, which determines the number of discharge cycles your battery has. Each battery has a finite number of discharge cycles — after that number, the battery will no longer accept a charge. While there is a standard definition, a cycle is understood as a full discharge of a charged battery followed by a recharge. On average, a lithium-ion battery has around 300–600 cycles. However, you can extend this number by using smaller depth of discharge. For example, if you only discharge to 40% (charging it back to 100% when it reaches that point), you would increase your cycles to between 600–1,500. Image via Battery University

Bad Habit #3: Using Knockoff ChargersAnother bad habit that about 14% of our readers admitted to was using knockoff chargers. Back when I had my Sony Vaio, I bought a knockoff charger to replace the broken OEM charger. With OEM chargers costing much more than a knockoff, it was hard to justify buying first-party. Plus, I thought all chargers were the same. Oh, how wrong I was.In the process of researching this topic, I learned about how sophisticated OEM chargers can be. Especially after the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle, many smartphone manufacturers went out of their way to ensure the same failure wouldn't occur with their devices. All devices that use lithium-ion batteries have to meet a specific set of mandatory protections. At the heart of this is the protection circuit. The International Electrotechnical Commission (an international organization that publishes standards for all electronics and related technologies) requires that these protection circuits include several safeguards to protect against common issues that may plague a battery. However, because the liability of a failed battery falls on the manufacturer, many companies include redundant systems to back up the mandatory systems already in place. These systems are heavily reliant on the communication between all parts involved with charging. Through this communication, the system can detect and stop over-current, over-voltage, and overheating at any point of failure. Image via Huawei But, when you use a knockoff charger, you lose this communication and coordination with the phone. Since failure can occur at the charger, you hinder the system's ability to detect and thwart it. Instead, the system is forced to rely solely on mandatory protection without any backup. With fast charging, communication is even more important between the phone and the charger. Voltage and current need to be set and regulated throughout charging. OEMs design their devices to work best with their equipment and test the safety using their chargers. Therefore, using knockoff chargers raises your risk level of a failure occurring. With this lack of communication, overcharging can occur. When that occurs, the best case scenario is that your battery capacity decreases. Often, this is how phones catch fire, as high heat from overcharging can result in the battery combusting and the phone catching fire.
What's the Right Way?So now that you are aware of why these habits are bad and how they affect your battery, what is the right way to charge your device? How can you reduce the stress on your battery, keep it safe, and keep it performing well over the years? Well, we have four recommendations for you and two for OEMs.

1. Use Fast ChargingThe first thing is to take advantage of fast charging, which can be found on smartphones at every price range. While fast charging does add stress to the battery because of increased heat, until OEMs add the ability to turn off this feature, it's the only way many of us can charge our phones. Therefore, use its benefits to combat battery stress by reducing total charging times. When you wake up in the morning, plug your phone in. Most of us have at least 30 minutes to spare while getting ready, and by that time, fast charging should have your battery up to at least 50 percent. Depending on the battery percentage when you began charging, 30 minutes could give you an all-day charge. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks

2. Hover in the Sweet ZoneThe second thing is to preserve your depth of discharge by hovering around the sweet zone: 25–85% battery level. At this range, you receive the best balance of depth of discharge and runtime. If you stay in this zone, you can maximize your battery use and retain that healthy battery life for a much longer time. As you can see, operating your battery between 85-25% offers the best balance of depth of charge and charge cycles. Image by Linus Tech Tips/YouTube
3. Keep Your Phone CoolThe third thing is to keep your phone in a cool area while charging. This doesn't mean to place your phone in the freezer or the fridge (batteries won't charge at extremely low temperatures anyway), but to avoid direct sunlight and excessive heat when it is charging. Look for flat, cool metal surfaces, as they will draw the most heat away from the phone and offer the best airflow.

4. Avoid Third-Party ChargersThe final recommendation I have for you is to avoid third-party chargers at all costs — not just the charging brick, but the cable as well. If you need a replacement charger, only buy one from your phone's manufacturer — preferably one designed for your specific model of smartphone. Keeping your phone between 25% and 85% at optimal temperatures will go a long way towards preserving its battery. Image by Dallas Thomas/Gadget Hacks While researching for this article, I came across a fantastic website called Battery University. I was able to interview Isidor Buchmann, CEO of Cadex Electronics, the company behind Battery University. Much of the information I've explained here was first explained to me by Mr. Buchmann — I honestly can't thank him enough. As an expert on all things batteries, Mr. Buchmann has a recommendation he'd like to share with smartphone manufacturers. He proposed that OEMs should include an option to disable fast charging manually — and while I recommend using fast charging to avoid bad habits, there's a good reason for this. The heat generated by fast charging causes stress to the battery. While most of us wouldn't want to return to a non-fast charging world, by providing users the ability to disable this feature, they could at least continue their bad habits at lower stress levels to their batteries. Especially for the stubborn folks who can't break their overnight charging habit, this would make the process much safer.A second recommendation is based on an article on their website discussing the differences between electric vehicles and smartphones batteries. Both use lithium-ion batteries but optimize them for a different purpose. Electric vehicles aim for longevity, while smartphones prioritize runtime.Electric vehicles achieve this longevity by actually tricking the user. They redefine what a full charge and a discharge are to prevent full cycles. Instead of 100% capacity, electric vehicles charge only to 80% and deplete to only 30 percent. This way, every electric vehicle lives its entire life in the sweet zone, and when the battery capacity begins to reduce, the system slowly increases the depth of discharge to maintain the same battery life while preserving the battery.I propose a similar option for smartphones. While it would require users to opt in, you could set the parameters you wish to charge and discharge to so that after the initial setup, you would never have to worry about maintaining the sweet zone. Instead, the phone would do it for you. But if you wanted maximum runtime, or in an emergency, you could switch off the feature for full access. Smartphone OEMs could learn a lot from charging systems in electric vehicles like the Tesla Model 3. Image by Tien Nguyen/Flickr If I had known back in college what I know now, I would have aced that assignment. My Sony Vaio's battery would have still been capable of holding a charge if I had just taken the time to implement these best practices for charging. Of course, it's too late for that, but it's not too late for your smartphone. If you don't learn anything else from this article, at least remember this: Take your phone off the charger as much as you can, keep it cool while it's charging, always use a first-party charger, and try to keep your battery in the 25–85% sweet zone.Don't Miss: How to Set a Charging Limit on Your Android Device to Avoid Excess Battery WearFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Enable One-Handed Typing on Your iPhone's Stock Keyboard

Apple introduced third-party keyboards back in iOS 8, and swipe-input options like Gboard, SwiftKey, and Swype made typing on an iPhone one-handed much easier. Even better, apps like Word Flow moved the keyboard to the side of the iPhone so there was less thumb-stretching. Well, now Apple has its own option in iOS 11 and iOS 12 for better one-handed typing in the stock keyboard. To use the one-handed mode in Apple's default keyboard, just make sure you're running at least iOS 11 on your iPhone, so this works in iOS 12 as well. Also, before going further, it's worth noting that this only works in portrait orientation. When using the stock Apple keyboard, long-press on the globe icon next to the "123" key (on older iPhones) or in the bottom-left corner of the screen (on Face ID iPhones) to bring up the keyboard menu.Don't Miss: Use Keyboard Shortcuts to Type Long Words & Phrases Faster An older Touch ID model (left) vs. a newer Face ID model (right). If you don't have any third-party keyboards installed or any additional languages from Apple enabled, you'll see a smiley emoji instead of a globe. For those of you who don't see a globe or a smiley there, it's because you don't even have the Emoji keyboard enabled for some odd reason.Don't Miss: How to Add, Switch, Reorder & Delete Keyboards on Your iPhone To make it clear, you cannot use Apple's one-handed keyboard unless you have either the Emoji keyboard, a different language keyboard, or a third-party keyboard also enabled. You'll need at least one additional keyboard besides "English (United States)" or whatever your primary language is.After long-pressing the globe or smiley, below the list of enabled keyboards you can switch to, you'll see icons for left, center, and right orientation for Apple's stock keyboard. If you use your iPhone with your left hand, choose the left orientation. If you use your iPhone with your right, choose the right orientation. Don't Miss: How to Unlock the Secret Emoticon Keyboard on Your iPhone Whenever you want to return to the center position, just tap on the arrow opposite of the left or right positioned keyboard to expand it back to full width. These options work for any of Apple's available "iPhone Keyboards."However, note that if you're currently using the Emoji keyboard, you'll see either an ellipsis (•••) or "ABC" icon where the globe or smiley was, but long-pressing on either option also opens up the keyboard settings panel. While I love this one-handed feature, it's not enough to make me want to switch from my preferred Gboard keyboard, especially since Gboard also added a one-handed typing mode.To get to this in Gboard, long-press on either the globe icon next to the "123" key (for older iPhones) or the cog icon just left of the space bar (for Face ID iPhones), then select "One-handed mode." It will automatically squeeze the keyboard to one side, and you can tap the arrow to switch sides or the expand icon to go back to full size. Swipe input even works in Gboard's one-handed mode, but just like Apple's version, it doesn't work in landscape orientation.Don't Miss: 19 Tips to Help You Master Gboard for iPhone If Apple implemented swipe input, I might finally switch back full time.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know AboutFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Convert Your Classic Game Boy into a Powerhouse Emulator That Plays Practically Any Retro Game

If you've got old game consoles lying around and aren't sure what to do with them, there's no shortage of projects you can undertake. From turning a Game Boy and Wii Remote into an Android phone gamepad to combining a GameCube and N64 to make a hybrid console, there's something for everyone.Alex over on Casing the Joint wanted to give his friend something unique for his birthday, so he modified a classic Game Boy to give it a few extra buttons and the ability to play games made for tons of other old consoles via a Dingoo DT-A330 emulator. He calls it the Gameboo. Image via wordpress.com After modifying the Game Boy so that everything would fit inside, Alex had to use circuit boards from two different Game Boys to wire the D-Pad and the A, B, Start, and Select buttons. Images via wordpress.com He also added X and Y buttons and put rocker switches where the volume and contrast controls were in order to keep to the original look since the emulator controls volume via software. Image via wordpress.com He even added AV-out and a headphone jack, plus a USB extension so the A330 could be charged without opening the case. Image via wordpress.com It looks a little messy inside, but you can see from the video below that it works perfectly. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
These photos don't do justice to the months of work that Alex put into this project, so be sure to check out his full writeup for tons more photos and a very lengthy step-by-step description of the process—if you dare.

How To: Use Your Chromecast to Make PowerPoint Presentations from Your Android

How To: Use Your Chromecast to Make PowerPoint Presentations from Your Android
Chromecast is so small and portable that it would seem to be a perfect device for making PowerPoint presentations. But even now that you can mirror your Android device's display, there are still a few issues. For instance, auto-rotation kicks in when you're not paying close enough attention to how you're holding your device, and there's not really a way to make reference notes for each slide without them showing up on the big screen.Well, a new app from the development team at LifeBoat Software solves these issues and makes casting a PowerPoint presentation into a much nicer experience. It's free, and it's available to all Android devices running KitKat 4.4.2 or higher, so make sure to have this one on standby for your next big presentation. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install ShowCastThe app that will let you cast PowerPoint presentations over to your Chromecast is called ShowCast, and it's available on the Google Play Store for free. Search for it by name to get the app installed, or head directly to the install page at this link.

Step 2: Install the Chromecast AppThe reason that this app requires Android 4.4.2 or higher is that it utilizes the screen mirroring feature in the Chromecast app for Android, which is only available on such devices. So to begin, make sure you have the Chromecast app installed, which is available on the Google Play Store.

Step 3: Mirror Your DisplayBefore you load up your PowerPoint slides, you'll have to start mirroring your device's display. Head to the Chromecast app's side navigation menu, then select "Cast Screen," and choose your Chromecast from the popup.

Step 4: Load Your Slides & Start Your PresentationWith your screen now mirrored over to the big screen, go ahead and open ShowCast. First up, you can choose the orientation for your presentation, so go with either "Portrait" or "Landscape" here. Next, it's time to load up your PowerPoint slides. They'll have to be stored locally on your Android device, and they'll need to be either JPG or PNG files. So make sure to export your presentation as one of these formats, then transfer the files over to your Android device. With that taken care of, tap the "Pick First Slide" option. From here, use the file browser menu to locate the folder on your device that holds the presentation slides. Once you're inside of the folder that contains your slides, tap the "Confirm" button at the bottom of the screen. At this point, if you have any notes that you'd like to use for your presentation, you can tap the "Pick First Note" button to load those, but note that they'll need to be in a different folder than your slides. When you're ready, tap the "Start Presentation" button at the bottom of the screen, and your PowerPoint slides will be queued up and ready to go. Just swipe between images on your phone, and the slides will be sent over to your Chromecast.Have you used ShowCast to make a presentation already? If so, let us know about it in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Android Hacks' Facebook or Twitter, or Gadget Hacks' Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
