How To: The Flashlight That Finally Lets You Adjust LED Brightness on Your Samsung Galaxy Note 2

I know what you're thinking. Why spend time talking about another flashlight application when there are literally thousands of them scattered throughout Google Play? As it turns out, there is a void in the realm of flashlight Android apps. Flashing lights, strobe lights, cop lights, warning lightsâ€”they're all available, but the one feature that's missing is adjustable brightness.If you've ever had an iPhone, it's fairly easy to adjust the intensity of your flashlight using apps like this one to dim the LED, but for some reason, this is not an easy task on Android devices like our Samsung Galaxy Note 2s. But it can be done.In this softModder tutorial, I'm going to show you an app that finally allows you to adjust the brightness of your rear-facing LED flash so you can have total control over your Android flashlight. Step 1: Make Sure You're RootedSince controlled levels of the camera's flash are needed, you'll need native control of the driver electronics, which means you need root access. If you're not already rooted, check out our complete softModder guide to doing so using ODIN for Windows. Also, make sure toback up your device, just in case.

Step 2: Install Adjustable Torch from Google PlayDownload and install Adjustable Torch from Android developer Mohammad Abu-Garbeyyeh. This app allows you to use the flash of your device as a flashlight with adjustable brightness levels.

Step 3: Grant Superuser Access & Start DimmingOnce you install Adjustable Torch, grant the app full access to your device and open it up. From there, you'll see an adjustable toggle which you can use to adjust the brightness of the flashlight.

Step 4: Accessing Your FlashlightOf course, you can access Adjustable Torch from the Home screen shortcut or the App Drawer, but if you exit the app, you can also turn it off and on from the Ongoing menu in the Notification tray. With the adjustable brightness void now filled, there's nothing more I need from flashlight apps. I mean, you can even automatically turn the flashlight on when you're in the dark. What more would you want?

Step 2: Attach Your Google AccountNext up, head to the Google Assistant page on IFTT at ifttt.com/google_assistant. From there, tap the "Connect" button, then sign into your primary Google account if prompted. Next, just tap the "Allow" button, and from now on, IFTTT will be capable of adding custom trigger phrases to your Google Assistant.

Step 3: Choose or Create a RecipeNext, you'll be redirected back to the Google Assistant IFTTT page (if not, just head to ifttt.com/google_assistant again). From here, you can tap the "Create Recipe" button at the top of the list if you'd like to make your own custom Google Assistant action, but if you're new to IFTTT, I'd suggest scrolling down to the bottom of this page and tapping "Browse more Recipes."From there, you'll see a list of ready-made IFTTT recipes that can make Google Assistant perform all sorts of actionsâ€”from posting to Facebook to turning off your Hue smart lights. When you find one that interests you, simply tap it to set it up.

Step 4: Add Your First RecipeOnce you've selected a recipe, you'll get a chance to customize it a bit. The first three fields on this page let you set custom trigger phrases for your recipeâ€”these are the commands you can give to Google Assistant when you want to execute this recipe.Then, towards the bottom, you can choose what Google Assistant will say in response when it recognizes your custom trigger phrase. Netflix was my proverbial gateway drug to cord-cutting, as I'm sure it was for many others. Yet as much as I truly love Netflix and its service, there are some annoyances I have with the interface of the desktop web version.Yes, finding movies and TV shows is easy, but my main issue is the scrolling feature. This feature requires that I hover over the arrows with my cursor in order to scroll through the titles in any given category, all at a glacial pace. Evidently, I'm not alone in my frustrations. Recently, developer Renan Cakirerk created a simple bookmarklet that enables a grid-like view for your Netflix homepage, making it easier to go through titles with just a simple click. He calls it "Netflix God Mode Bookmarklet," and it's simple to set up. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Getting StartedJust visit Renan's website from whatever web browser you watch Netflix in, then click on and drag the green "Netflix | God Mode" button (this is the bookmarklet) to your Bookmarks or Favorites bar. Note: To display the Bookmarks Bar in Chrome, simply hit Command Shift B on Mac or Control Shift B on Windows. The Mac shortcut works for Safari's Favorites Bar, too. For either Firefox or Internet Explorer, go to View -> Toolbars and select Bookmarks Toolbar or Favorites Bar, respectively.

Step 2: Enabling God ModeIn order to use God Mode, all you have to do sign into Netflix and click on the bookmarklet in your Bookmarks or Favorites bar. You'll then see the confined categories on the homepage expand to make viewing all titles at once a cinch. Again, this only applies to the homepage of the Netflix websiteâ€”you cannot use God Mode in any other page (My List, New Arrivals, etc.), at least not yet. Unlocking Your BootloaderIf the term bootloader is unfamiliar to you, I can help break it down.In order to root an Android device and install your own custom ROM, the bootloader needs to be unlocked. The bootloader is code that allows the operating system to run on a device, and it carries the specific information needed to boot the device and run it the way the developers made it to run.Bootloaders are very specific and every manufacturer uses a different variation of the same ROM for their own devices. These bootloaders come locked because the manufacturers prefer to keep the hardware that already runs the device running smoothly. In order to install your own ROM, it NEEDS to be unlocked. I've already shown you some of the new features of iOS 8, like location-based app alerts, randomized MAC addresses, hidden Safari tricks, and a slew of new things in the Messages app. But if you've had the chance the explore iOS 8, let's go through some of the changes that Apple has made to the latest iteration of its mobile operating system.

Podcasts Is Now Integrated in iOS 8Apple has now integrated their Podcasts app into iOS 8, like they did with iBooks in the first beta. With it, you can subscribe to your favorite podcasts or discover new ones from the thousands of free audio and video options that Podcasts has to offer. (1) "My Podcasts" tab in Podcasts. (2) StarTalk worked without any problems. Without you tapping or touching anything, you're taken to pages that promote Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, and Game of War, to name just a few. (1) Not a game ad, but it's where they're usually located. (2) Game ads auto-redirect to the App Store. Safari now blocks these ads from automatically redirecting you to the App Store, only taking you to the games if you manually tap on the ad. This has been a huge problem for me in the past, so I'm happy with this new feature.

Saving several images at once from the Details section in Messages now works. Photo albums for slow-mo and bursts. "Recently Deleted" album now shows "Items will be erased 30 days after being marked for deletion." Under the battery usage by app, cell coverage is now included. Even if you're not charging your phone, you can use the "Hey, Siri" command when Siri is already up on the screen. When you pull down Spotlight search and you have a recent search which is still saved there, the search text will now be highlighted. In previous versions, the cursor would be at the end of the search text, making it harder to start a new search.
Bug FixesAs with any beta versions of iOS, there are still several noticeable bugsâ€”Messages application is buggy. Keyboard & QuickType disappear at times. Photo & Audio icon in Messages is no longer blue for iMessage texts. Photo icon still green for regular text messages.

Apple's iOS 7 is riddled with annoying features, and some of them can't be toggled off in Settings. Sure, it may be nitpicky, but it's my device, and it should behave the way I want it to.If you've got some of your own annoyances regarding your lock screen, status bar, control center, or springboard (home screen), then HideMe7 Lite is a must-have tweak. To get started, make sure your iPhone is jailbroken, then head to Cydia to download and install HideMe7 Lite. Now, head into the stock Settings application and locate the HideMe7 preferences to start making changes. We'll get into some specifics below, but whenever you make any changes, remember to Respring to apply them.

Hide Lock Screen FeaturesUnder the preferences, head into LockScreen and start toggling off undesirable features, like the date, camera icon, or grabbers. You can always toggle all the features off if you want to seem mysterious or maybe confuse some people.

Modify Your Home ScreenThe home screen preferences are located under SpringBoard. Browse through and hide features like the app labels, badge icons, dock background, and page dots. There are a bunch more that you can explore on your own.

Change Up Your Status BarGo into Status Bar to toggle just about everything that is displayed in the status bar. Some of the basic features we can hide are the battery icon, Bluetooth icon, carrier, and data networks. There are a ton of options here to really allow you to make your status bar truly yours. If you want to add to the status bar, you can add custom logos and replace the carrier name text using the Zeppelin and FakeCarrier tweaks.

Quick Control Center ChangesIn the Control Center settings, every aspect of the Control Center can be hidden, but depending on the amount to choose to hide, the size of the Control Center may be affected. Pick and choose what you need to make it work for you. If you want to add to the Control Center or remove single toggles, then check out CCToggles to do so.
Should You Upgrade or Not?The paid version ($0.99) adds the option to apply changes to the messaging and music app, as well as Safari. If you need to make changes to the messaging app, just use Messages Customiser, which is free. AMOLED display panels like the one found in most Samsung Galaxy devices, including the Galaxy S6 models, are known for their deep blacks and vivid colors. The downside here is that the colors tend to be over-saturated and not very realistic.Samsung countered this issue by offering a "Screen mode" settings menu that you can use to adjust your display calibration. Of the four standard options that you'll find in this menu, the "Basic" setting offers the most realistic color palette, but whites tend to be a bit yellow with this enabled.On the bright side, there's another option that has accurate colors and pure, crisp whitesâ€”but it was hidden from the default settings menu. Luckily, this hidden menu is incredibly easy to access, so your Galaxy device can have accurate colors in no time. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Nova LauncherTo access the hidden display calibration menu, you'll need a launcher that is capable of creating activity shortcuts. (If you'd rather not install a third-party launcher, an alternative method is shown near the end of this guide using the app More Shortcuts.)Head to the Google Play Store, then search for and install Nova Launcher. Once Nova is installed, press your device's home button, then select "Nova Launcher" from the list and press "Always."

Step 2: Create a Shortcut to the Hidden MenuNext, long-press any empty space on your home screen, then select "Widgets" from the menu. From here, long-press the "Activities" icon, then drag it and drop it onto your home screen. At this point, a menu will pop up asking you to assign an activity to this shortcut. Scroll through the list and select "Settings," then tap the "ModePreviewTablet" activity to finish creating your shortcut.

Step 3: Enable 'Adapt Display' ModeNext, simply tap the shortcut you just created to access the hidden display calibration menu. From here, deselect "Adapt display," then reselect it and press "OK." The new, more accurate display mode will be activated immediately, and to clarify, this is different than the "Adaptive display" mode that is already available in the regular settings menu.

Alternative Method for Stock Touchwiz LauncherIf you'd rather not load up Nova to activate this hidden setting, you can access it using the More Shortcuts app from developer ChYK, which is a great app that we've covered in the past.
Once installed, open More Shortcuts and select "Activity," then head to Settings and select "ModePreviewTablet." From there, simply deselect "Adapt display" and reselect it. With "Adapt display" mode activated, you should notice that the screen colors are a lot more accurate, and the whites don't have any yellowish tint. The mode will be disabled if you reboot your phone, but you can easily enable it again with the shortcut on your home screen or using More Shortcuts.How do you like your new display calibration setting? A vastly different operating system and the ability to customize anything and everything might be too much for some people. Taking in all that new, while having to let go of the old, can be as daunting as climbing Mount Everest.Many iOS users approach switching over to Android with a lot of hesitance, especially when they don't want to lose features they've grown to love on their iPhones. One such feature is the lock screen camera.
TouchWiz vs. iOS Lock Screen Camera AccessWith the iPhone, you have the ability to swipe up and open your camera, despite the phone being protected by a PIN or password. With the Galaxy Note 2, you have to type in your passcode and swipe the screen in order to use your camera, wasting precious seconds that could be the difference between a great photo and a missed opportunity.If this capability is something you fear losing when making the switch, I'm here to calm your fears.

Step 1: Make Sure You're RootedIn order to install the Xposed Framework on your Galaxy Note 2, you'll need to be rooted. If you're not already rooted, check out our complete softModder guide on doing so with ODIN. Also, make sure to back up your device when installing any apps that require root.
Step 2: Make Sure Unknown Sources Is CheckedThis is hardly something a softModder wouldn't know already, but just in case you've turned it off for some reason, make sure to enabled Unknown sources by going to Menu -> Settings -> Security.

Step 3: Install the Xposed FrameworkBefore you can install the camera, you'll need to download Xposed Framework, which installs the framework that allows you to modify your ROM without flashing.Download and install the Xposed Installer APK onto your device. Open up the app and select Install/Update to ensure you're on the latest version. Reboot your device.
Step 4: Install Enable Camera on Lockscreen (1.0)After you reboot your device, download and install the Enable Camera on Lockscreen APK.

Step 5: Activate the ModuleYou can't open the application yet, so just head over to Xposed Installer, tap on Modules and check Enable Camera on Lockscreen. Reboot your device once again.

Step 6: Lockscreen SettingsUnder Settings -> Lock screen, make sure that With swipe lock is checked. From the same page, tap on Lock screen options -> Shortcuts and assign the camera as one of the shortcuts.

Step 7: Swipe Camera UpAfter you change your settings (if needed), test out your new feature. You should now be able to tap and swipe up on the camera shortcut at the bottom of your lockscreen, taking you directly to the camera. It might take a second to load, so be patient. When I tested it out, it took a couple of seconds but other times it was instant. Enjoy your new ninja-fast picture taking abilities, and be sure to let us know what you think in the comments.
