How To: The Best Way to Share Your Favorite iOS Apps with Friends

How To: The Best Way to Share Your Favorite iOS Apps with Friends
With over a million apps and counting, it's not exactly easy to browse the iOS App Store to find fresh and interesting new apps for your iPad or iPhone. Even rummaging through the featured apps and games isn't easy. For me, and many others, the best way to discover new apps and games is from your family, friends, and coworkers. And that's where Homer comes into play, and I'm not talking about Homer Simpson.Homer is a free iOS app, from PayPal co-founder Max Levchin and the HVF team, that streamlines this app-sharing process by organizing all of the apps on your device into an easily shared list to send to people in need. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Setting Up a Homer AccountWhen you first open Homer, you'll need to log in by using credentials from Facebook or Google, or by creating an account with an email address. You'll need to create a username and password, then enter other information such as your name and phone number (optional). You can also throw in a picture of you for your profile.

Adding Your Apps to HomerAfter you signing up, Homer will prompt you to add applications. Tap on Add Your Apps, exit Homer, and take screenshots of all your home screen pages. If you have apps inside of folders, you'll need to open each folder up and take a screenshot of each folder page. Homer will then automatically analyze your screenshots to quickly pull all of the apps on your device and transport them to your profile.

Finding Friends, Trending Profiles, & Downloading AppsIn Homer, you'll automatically be taken to the Trending section, where you'll find popular profiles of other users. Tap on the eye icon at the top left to access a small menu, where you can then tap on Friends to find your buddies from your Contacts, Facebook, and Twitter. If you find some friends or just want to check out some of the trending profiles, tap on their name to find their home screen apps. Tap on any app to view a short summary and a link to its iOS App Store profile.

Managing Your Profile, Fixing Apps, & Hiding InfoAt the bottom of Homer, you'll notice an iPhone poking out with your username and picture on it. From there, you can access your profile, where you can edit your username and other information, set a different wallpaper for the app, and edit your favorite apps to show up on the first page of your profile (which are highlighted in yellow). If you notice that Homer has incorrectly analyzed some of your apps, you can tap on them and select This is not my app from the menu that appears. From this same menu, you can hide a certain application or show it in the App Store.

Updating the Home Screen & Going PrivateIn the Settings, you can update your homescreen (for when you download new apps) and make your profile private so that only your followers can view it. Now, instead of asking around or browsing aimlessly to see which apps are worth downloading, you can easily look through your family and friends' home screens and see what apps they're rockin'.

How To: Thermo Diem Tells You How the Weather Feels Today as Compared to Yesterday
When I get weather information, I prefer to receive it in a straight-forward, minimalistic fashion. Living in California, I could care less about wind speeds, humidity, or any other calculations that I can't analyze in a second. I essentially use the information to help decide whether I'll be wearing shorts or pants on a given day, so give it to me bluntly.Thankfully, the development team at Basic Function understands where I'm coming from and have developed a relational weather app called Thermo Diem that provides weather information in a minimalistic way by relating it to how it felt outside the previous day. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Thermo DiemTaking into account humidity, wind, and temperature, the app bases its information relative to what it felt like "yesterday," which allows everyday people to easily assess their day's forecast. Install the app for free from the iOS App Store to get started.

Step 2: Add LocationsOnce you open the app, you'll immediately realize how minimal it actually is. Thermo Diem has only two screens: the settings, which is where you add locations or remove ads for $0.99, and the actual weather information.

Step 3: Apply the WidgetThe widget makes it even quicker to view weather information from your Notification Center. Just apply the widget and pull down to view. To change which location is used in the widget, open the app and just tap a location under the settings; whichever info is shown in the app is what will be shown on the widget. If you can recollect what the weather was on the previous day, then you can use this app and appreciate its simplicity.

How To: Lock Your Android with a Quick Shake Instead of Pressing Power

How To: Lock Your Android with a Quick Shake Instead of Pressing Power
These days, using the power button to lock your Android seems a little old-fashioned. Thanks to third-party apps and mods, you could seamlessly lock your device using a double-tap, a swipe, and even gravity, or you could just throw it in your pocket, all of which help prevent additional wear and tear on your power button. Now, we've got another method for you—just shake. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Step 1: Get Your Device ReadyFirstly, let's ensure that your device is prepared. You will need to be running Android 4.0 (Jelly Bean) or higher. You'll also need to be rooted, have the Xposed Framework installed, and enable "Unknown sources" for the installation of apps from outside of Google Play.

Step 2: Install the ModOpen the Xposed Installer app, which can be found in your app drawer, and use the search function to locate and install Shaky from developer Riaz Mohamed. Alternatively, you can download Shaky directly from the Google Play Store ("Unknown sources" does not have to be enabled for this option). After installation, make sure to properly activate the module.

Step 3: Shake It OffWith the module activated, open the Shaky interface from your app drawer and toggle on the service. You can also opt to leave the screen on when locking the device or "Automatically Resecure" your device after a given time. Once you've made your changes, restart your device and start shakin'. If you want another way to combat wear and tear on your device's power button, try out Volume Power, which lets you unlock your device using the volume buttons. For more Android tips, make sure to follow Gadget Hacks over on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter so that you're always up to date.

How To: Add Every Volume Slider to Android's Notification Tray

How To: Add Every Volume Slider to Android's Notification Tray
Your device has several volume levels that are regularly adjusted: the alarm, media, and ringer. Keeping track of the various volumes on a device can become an easy-to-forget task, potentially resulting in you not hearing an alarm in the morning, as you have to enter the sound options or trigger a volume change, then expand the dialog box that pops up.Like me, developer Hamzah Malik found this to be less efficient than many would prefer and has implemented a better way, via an Xposed mod, that places the volume sliders in the notification panel for easier sound adjustments. Make sure you have a rooted device with the Xposed Framework installed, as well as "Unknown sources" checked in your settings. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Notification Volume SeekbarGo into the Xposed Installer app, select "Download," and search for Notification Volume Seekbar, then swipe over and install. After doing so, properly activate the module and reboot—once your device is back up, you'll have better access to your volumes, directly through the notification tray.

Step 2: Adjust Your Scale Positioning & LengthLocate the NotificationVolume app in your app drawer—this is where the setting are located. You'll be able to set a Padding from bottom, which will help adjust how high the bars will be from the bottom of notification tray. You can also edit the Seekbar width to expand the length of your notification panel—500-1,000 should expand it across the length of the tray, depending on your Android. Restart your device to apply any changes.
Final Thoughts & Known IssuesThe module works great, and definitely makes both viewing and adjusting the volume on your device much easier. But as convenient as it is, there are some minor issues with this mod.First, if you have a bunch of notifications, they can interfere and overlap with the volume sliders, but clearing them away will do the trick. Second, if the volume is raised or lowered using the hard keys, it will not be reflected in the notification sliders.Aside from those minor issues, which will hopefully be addressed in an update, I'm really digging this mod. Let us know your thoughts, either through the comments, Facebook, or Twitter.

How To: Unlock the Bootloader on Your OnePlus 6T

How To: Unlock the Bootloader on Your OnePlus 6T
Before you can dive into customizing your OnePlus 6T, you must take the initial step of unlocking the bootloader to gain the ability to install TWRP, Magisk, custom ROMs, and other mods.A bootloader is a program that starts up on a device that states what operating system it is running through official means. This official firmware is locked down by default, but unlocking your bootloader will allow you to make any changes using an alternate firmware of your choosing. An everyday use case scenario for unlocking the bootloader is to install a custom recovery, such as TWRP. This will give you the ability to flash custom kernels, ROMs, and any Magisk related files all the same. This includes the core Magisk system for gaining root access and modules as well.DisclaimersUnlocking the bootloader will factory reset your device. Your phone will now fail SafetyNet checks, but Magisk can fix it. Unlocking the bootloader will not void your OnePlus warranty.
Step 1: Back Up Your DataIt's important to note that unlocking the bootloader will always factory reset your device, so it would be advisable to make sure you back up your data. This is the case with all devices, not just the OnePlus 6T, so do keep that in mind for future reference.Connect your phone to a computer through a USB connection and enable either MTP or PTP transfer mode, which you can set by tapping the notification that appears when you connect the USB cable. Now it's a matter of navigating to your phone's internal storage through the computer's file browser. From there, drag and drop any files or folders you wish to save onto the computer and you are good to go!

Step 2: Enable Developer OptionsEnabling the developer options will give you access to a setting that gives your phone the ability the unlock the bootloader. You want to go into Settings –> About phone, and from there, scroll down and locate the "Build number" field. Tap anywhere in this field 7 times in rapid succession until it grants you developer access. If you have any security settings in place, it will prompt you to enter your password so you can grant your phone full access to the developer options. Once you correctly enter your password, you will see a toast notification letting you know the developer options have been enabled.

Step 3: Enable OEM UnlockingWhile still in the "About phone" section, tap the back button once to return to the main Settings page. Next, head into "System," scroll down if you have to, and then tap the "Developer options" section. Find and tap the "OEM unlocking" option to toggle it on, then enter your PIN or password if you are prompted to do so. After that, a new popup will be presented to you, from there you tap "Enable" to turn this option on.

Step 4: Enable Advanced RebootWhile in the developer options page, scroll down a little until you find the "Advanced reboot" section and enable this setting. This will allow you to boot into fastboot mode without needing a computer or having to use a button combination.

Step 5: Boot into Fastboot ModeAfter you have enabled the Advanced reboot option, hold the power button to bring up the power menu for the device. Tap the "Bootloader" option, and your phone will immediately begin to restart to the bootloader main menu. Now is an excellent time to connect your phone to a computer via a USB connection for the next steps of the guide.

Step 6: Install Fastboot on Your ComputerIf this is your first time unlocking a bootloader, you must install Fastboot onto your computer if you have not already. There once was a time where you would have to install the Android SDK along with a variety of other things, but that is no longer necessary. It used to be a bit of a lengthy process, but lucky for you, Google now offers something called "SDK Platform Tools," which includes the core files you need for Fastboot and ADB commands. No need to overly complicate things, right? Keep it simple with a local-only install! To obtain the latest platform-tools release, which is currently at version 28.0.1 (September 2018), download it directly from Google:Download the latest Platform-Tools package from Google If you prefer system-wide commands, you can learn how to set your computer up for that environment:How to Install Fastboot on Windows, Mac, or Linux

Step 7: Open a Command WindowSince we have simplified things by opting to use a local-only install for Fastboot, it's as simple as extracting the platform-tools folder you downloaded from Step 6 to any location of your choosing. The benefit of doing a local-only install makes for an easier install process while allowing you to move the folder around at any time freely. For now, extract the platform-tools folder to your computer's desktop, but after you are finished with the guide feel free to move it to a location that works best for you.Head into the newly extracted platform-tools folder and copy the location of this folder from the address bar at the top of the window. If you're on macOS Mojave and you're having trouble copying the folder location, open the platform-tools folder in Finder, press cmd+opt+P to toggle the path bar overlay, then right-click the "platform-tools" portion of the path bar at the bottom of the window and choose "Copy as Pathname." Next, locate the appropriate command prompt or terminal window for your operating system. On Windows, bring up your start menu (Windows key) and do a search for "cmd" and then hit enter to open the terminal application. For Linux and Mac systems, open the "Terminal" program from the applications folder.Once you have the terminal program running, you now want to redirect it to your platform-tools folder so you can begin unlocking your bootloader. Start by typing in "cd" then include a space, followed by pasting the location of your platform-tools folder you got from earlier. Once you have done that, hit enter to point the terminal program to this directory so you can use the Fastboot commands.

Step 8: Verify Your Phone ConnectionYou need to make sure your computer is properly communicating with your phone to execute Fastboot commands. To do so type the following command and then the enter key: fastboot devices Note: Mac and Linux users will most likely have to add a period and a slash before entering any of the commands listed here (e.g., ./fastboot devices).Successfully running this command will show a grouping of numbers and letters, which is the unique identifier for your device.

Step 9: Unlock Your BootloaderOnce your phone is all set up with Fastboot and your computer recognizes it as such, you can finally begin the final step to unlocking your bootloader. Type the following command and then hit the enter key (don't forget about the ./ if you're on Mac or Linux): fastboot oem unlock You will now see a new prompt on your phone's screen asking you to verify the unlocking stage for the bootloader. Highlight the "Unlock the bootloader" option by using the volume keys, and then press the power button to confirm it. From here, your phone will reboot automatically and begin wiping your data clean, as stating it would do from the start. Once the process completes, your bootloader will now officially be unlocked! The initial data wipe and reboot could take a few minutes, so be patient while it does its thing. You then go through the standard setup of your device, and you are good to go from there (e.g., sign into your accounts and restore data). As a side note, "The bootloader is unlocked, and software integrity cannot be guaranteed" is a message that alerts you upon every system reboot. This is a regular occurrence and does not impact your system at all, so no need to worry about that!Don't Miss: The Best Phones for Rooting & ModdingFollow Gadget Hacks on Pinterest, Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

How To: Get the Pixel 2 Launcher with Google Now & the New 'At a Glance' Widget No Root Needed
Google's Pixel lineup hangs its hat on smooth software and a polished UI. At the core of this experience is the Pixel Launcher, a home screen app that is often imitated, but never perfectly duplicated. That is, until developer AmirZ released the latest version of his Rootless Pixel Launcher port. This simple APK will install on any phone running Lollipop or higher, so virtually anyone can get the Google experience on their phone — and even better, none of the features require root. One of the standout features from this latest version is the inclusion of Google's "At a Glance" widget, which resides at the top of the primary home screen and shows the current weather along with any upcoming calendar events. It's a nice experience, really, so I'll show you how to try it out below.
CompatibilityAs I mentioned, this mod doesn't require root, but you will need to be running Android Lollipop or higher to try it . We've tested it on the Galaxy S8 and the S6 Edge , and it runs flawlessly on both devices. However, not all features are available to all Android versions. For example, App Shortcuts require 7.1 or higher, the automatic light and dark theme requires 7.0 or above, and notification badges only work on 6.0 or higher. For the full list of feature discrepancies, check out the developer's release thread on Reddit. Finally, to ensure that all features work properly (particularly the "At a Glance" widget and the Google Now integration), make sure you have the latest version of the Google app and Google Calendar installed.

Install the Pixel 2 LauncherBefore you get started, make sure you have Unknown Sources enabled. After that, just tap the following link to download the latest version of the Rootless Pixel Launcher. From there, open the APK from your notification tray or using any file browser, then press "Install" when prompted.Download the Rootless Pixel 2 Launcher (Lollipop or higher) Worth noting, if you get an "App not installed" error or a message stating that the file is corrupt, go through Settings –> Apps –> All and uninstall any previous versions of the ported Pixel launcher. After the Pixel 2 launcher is successfully installed, tap on the home button. From there, you'll be prompted to choose a new home screen app, so select "Pixel Launcher" from the list, then choose "Always" if prompted. To make sure the Google Now page is working, go ahead and restart your phone at this point. You're now free to enjoy the Pixel 2 launcher experience — most notably, the "At a Glance" widget and a new search bar that's easier to access, along with an app drawer that you can access by swiping up from dock at the bottom of the screen. There are a few more finishing touches, like some nifty bounce animations and the new Google calendar and weather widget, so there's lot to like. How are you enjoying the new Pixel launcher so far? How To: Download the New iOS 13 Wallpapers Right Now
We're too excited about iOS 13 and its many shiny new features. System-wide dark mode, new Messages options, and so much more awaits the general public sometime this fall. You don't need to wait until then, however, if you want to test drive one of our favorite iOS 13 features — its wallpapers. As with most iOS releases, Apple created new wallpapers for their 13th iPhone OS. This year, the theme is light and dark, as each wallpaper changes depending on your iPhone's current light or dark mode status. While you won't be able to take advantage of that dynamic feature running anything earlier than iOS 13, you can download the light and dark wallpapers individually, to essentially achieve the same result.Don't Miss: How to Enable Apple's True Dark Mode for iOS 13
Want the Real Experience? Download iOS 13 BetaWhile you can simply download the iOS 13 wallpapers below, you won't be getting the fully dynamic experience. Plus, you won't get all the new iOS 13 features that come alongside those wallpapers. To do that, you'll need to download the iOS 13 developer beta, released by Apple after WWDC 2019.The beta is still in an early stage, meaning it's unstable and very buggy. Even Apple cautions all non-developers to wait until July for the release of the first iOS 13 public beta. But if you're feeling brave, you can be among the first to test-drive iOS 13's awesome and exciting features. Follow our guide below to get started today!More Info: How to Download iOS 13 on Your iPhone Right Now

News: The Best Black Friday 2017 Speaker Deals for Your Smartphone

News: The Best Black Friday 2017 Speaker Deals for Your Smartphone
Speakers today are a marvel for their portability and sound quality. No longer do we need giant boxes to bring down the house — a speaker that can fit in your hand can fill a room with your favorite music. This is even more important when you pair it with your smartphone, and there are lots of smartphone-friendly speakers on sale this Black Friday. We've rounded up the best deals we could find for the Black Friday shopping holiday below, focusing primarily on the best speakers for your iPhone or Android phone. There are lots of great deals here, and we'll be sure to add more when we find them. Some are actually available right now, while most others will be available on Black Thursday (aka Thanksgiving) or Black Friday weekend.
Option 1: Amazon's Speaker DealsAmazon, of course, has plenty of deals on its own smart speakers. Oddly, the deals are only for bundled packs, meaning you'll need to buy multiples of the speaker you're interested in, as well as enter the proper code, in order to get the discount. These deals are available right now, unlike most of the other deals from other stores, since Amazon holds Black Friday deals all month on a rotating basis.$50 off three Amazon Echo devices (code ECHO3PACK) $100 off two Echo Shows (code SHOW2PACK or just buy on Nov. 16 only) $49.99 off six Echo Dots (code DOT6PACK) $20 off three Echo Dots (code DOT3PACK) If Echo devices aren't quite what you're looking for, Amazon also has plenty of deals on third-party speakers, and we mean plenty. Again, these are all available right now. Some of these deals might disappear shortly, but we'll try to keep this list updated as deals rotate in and out on Amazon's website.10% off Bose SoundTouch 10 Wireless Speaker 10% off Bose SoundTouch 20 Series III Wireless Speaker (either color) 10& off Bose SoundTouch 30 Series III Wireless Speaker 57% off SoundPEATS 10W Portable Wireless Speaker 50% off Polk Audio T30 23% off Polk Audio MagniFi Mini Home Theater 70% off Arocomm IPX7 Wireless Speaker 15% off iClever Bluetooth Speaker 25% off Polk Audio TL2 Speaker 49% off Samesay Mini Wireless Soundbar 35% off B&O Play Bluetooth Speaker (Stone Grey) 30% off B&O Play Bluetooth Speaker (Natural) 49% off SoundSOUL Wireless Water Fountain Speakers 20% off Anker 12W IPX5 Waterproof Speaker 24% Anker SoundCore Nano Speaker 18% off Etekcity RoverBeats T3 Speaker 48% off Mpow Speaker 15% off Tonsum Speaker Nut 20% off iHome iBT62B Color Changing Speaker 25% off Owlee Highly Mini Speaker 25% off Owlee Stealth360 Premium Speaker 25% off Owlee Scroll Premium Speaker 55% off Mengo Waterproof Speaker 20% off AmazonBasics Wireless Speaker 30% off B&O Play Beoplay A2 Active Speaker 72% off Mpow IPX5 Waterproof Speaker 17% off Sony SRSZR7 Hi-Resolution Wireless Speaker 15% off TinyFin Mini Wireless Speaker 21% off iHome iBT12SC Flash-Shaped Wireless Speaker 41% off Stelle Audio x Swarovski Mini Clutch Speaker 25% off Stelle Audio Mini Clutch Speaker (Dazzling Diamond) 26% off Stelle Audio Mini Clutch Speaker (Metallic Pink) 58% off Mpow Bluetooth Speaker
Option 2: Bose's Speaker DealsIt's always nice when the manufacturer sets its own Black Friday prices. Bose has some great Black Friday deals on its speakers, including some not found on Amazon. If you're looking for a discounted, high-quality speaker, Bose might be your spot this Black Friday.$20 off SoundLink Mini Bluetooth Speaker II $20 off SoundTouch 10 Wireless Speaker $35 off SoundTouch 20 Wireless Speaker $50 off SoundTouch 30 Wireless Speaker $60 off Wave SoundTouch system IV
Option 3: Best Buy's Speaker DealsBest Buy has it all, as far as speakers are concerned. If you're looking for something smarter than your average boom box, Best Buy has deals on both Google Home and Amazon Echo devices, as well as their own Insignia brand of smart speakers.$20 off Amazon Echo Dot (2nd gen.) $20 off Amazon Echo (2ng gen.) $30 off Amazon Echo Plus $50 off Amazon Echo Show $49.91 off Google Home $30 off Insignia Voice Smart Speaker $60 off Insignia Portable Voice Smart Speaker If you aren't in the market for a smart speaker, no worries — Best Buy has plenty of standard speakers for you to check out. There are good deals on Sony, JBL, Insignia, and JAM portable speakers, among others.$50 off Sony XB20 portable Bluetooth speaker $30 off Insignia portable wireless speakers $150 off JBL Xtreme portable Bluetooth speaker $150 off Sony XB60 portable Bluetooth speaker $42 off JAM Rave Plus portable Bluetooth speaker $300 off harman/kardon Onyx Studio 4 portable Bluetooth speaker
Option 4: Target's Speaker DealsTarget actually carries the same Amazon Echo deals as Best Buy, with the exception of the Amazon Echo Plus. If you have your eyes set on one of those, you'll have to go with Best Buy.$20 off Amazon Echo Dot (2nd gen.) $20 off Amazon Echo (2ng gen.) $50 off Amazon Echo Show Like Best Buy, Target also carries Google Home devices for the same amount, however, they also will have a sale on the Google Home Mini along with a $10 Target gift card, which gives you more flexibility with your smart speaker purchases.$50 off Google Home $20 off Google Home Mini, plus $10 Target gift card For more conventional speakers, Target lists deals on JBL, Ultimate Ears, Altec Lansing, and a few more brands. There are plenty of deals to be found here.$60 off JBL Charge 3 waterproof Bluetooth speaker $30 off Ultimate Ears Wonderboom 360 wireless Bluetooth speaker $50 off Altec Lansing Mini LifeJacket 2 wireless Bluetooth speaker $20 off Altec Lansing Mini H2O waterproof Bluetooth speaker
Option 5: Costco's Speaker DealsCostco's speaker selection is a little on the light side, however, that doesn't mean you'll walk away empty-handed. If you're looking for Google Home devices, you should definitely check out Costco. You can get up to three Google Home two-packs for a decent price, so if you know multiple people who want a Google Home this year, Costco might be your best bet.$50 off Google Home 2-Pack (limit 3)
Option 6: Sears's Speaker DealsLike Costco, Sears is a little short on speaker supply. However, the retailer is promoting the Altec Lansing Mini Lifejacket 2 Bluetooth speaker for half of its original cost. Target does offer that same deal, however, so you might want to consider Sears only if this store is more convenient for you.$50 off Altec Lansing Mini LifeJacket 2 wireless Bluetooth speaker $30 off iLive wireless speaker with Amazon Alexa
Option 7: Kmart's Speaker DealsWhile traditional speakers may be scare in Kmart's Black Friday sale, you can pick up a soundbar if you happen to find yourself in the store. The Samsung soundbar Kmart is promoting is $80 off, and you will receive $20 of in-store cashback credit. If you don't mind the lack of portability, this might not be such a bad deal.$80 off Samsung HW-M360 200-watt soundbar with wireless subwoofer
Option 8: NewEgg's Speaker DealsNewEgg definitely has more headphone options than speakers. However, if you're thinking about finding a good deal on a Klipsch speaker, NewEgg might be the spot for you. You can get $90 off a Klipsch KMC1 speaker or $72 off a Klipsch GiG speaker through NewEgg.$90 off Klipsch KMC1 portable Bluetooth speaker $72 off Klipsch GiG portable wireless speaker $200 off Polk Audio SurroundBar 5000 with wireless subwoofer
Option 9: Sam's Club's Speaker DealSam's Club is only offering one discounted speaker this Black Friday — the 808 Audio Canz H2O wireless Bluetooth speaker, which comes in packs of two. While it doesn't carry the brand name of Beats or Bose, these things are IP67-rated water resistant, which is pretty neat. Consider Sam's Club if you're looking for a reasonable price for a pair of speakers.$40 off 808 Audio Canz H2O wireless Bluetooth speaker (2-pk) Which store or stores do you think offer the best speaker selection this Black Friday? News: Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone XS

News: Everything You Need to Know About the iPhone XS
Apple's successor to the iPhone X is a beautifully made smartphone with much of the same characteristics, including a 5.8-inch OLED screen, two storage choices, and Face ID. But many features set the iPhone XS apart from its predecessor, as well as the other 2018 lineup of iPhones, making it a worthy choice to upgrade to if you're in the market for a new mobile device.A lot of rumors from over the last year ending up coming true, while some fell by the wayside. But overall, the specs for the iPhone XS are a decent step forward for Apple's lineup of smartphones. Plus, if you're into bigger phones, you always have the iPhone XS Max to fall back on, and if you can't afford either device, the iPhone XR is still a step forward from last year's iPhone 8 and 8 Plus.Don't Miss: 100+ iOS 12 Features You Need to Know About for iPhone But before you start thinking about the iPhone XS Max or XR, or any other smartphone for that matter, let's see what Apple's iPhone XS is all about.Jump to a section: Important Dates | Storage Capacity | Price for Everything | Body | Basics | Display | Performance | Battery | Front Camera | Rear Camera | Audio | Sensors | Connectivity | Security | Software | Box IncludesCompare the iPhone XS to Other Smartphones
Important DatesThe new iPhone XS was announced on Sept. 12, 2018, at Apple's fall event, alongside the iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR. The iPhone XS and XS Max will be available to preorder from Apple, carriers, and big-box stores on Sept. 15, 2018, and they will hit shelves for everyone on Sept. 21, 2018. The XR comes later in October.Release date: Sept. 21, 2018 Preorder date: Sept. 15, 2018 Announced: Sept. 12, 2018
Storage CapacityJust like the iPhone X the previous year, the iPhone XS will come in either 64 GB or 256 GB storage capacities, but it also adds a 512 GB tier. And just like every other iPhone before it, there will be no support for expandable storage such as SD cards.Storage available: 64 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB Expandable storage: no
Price for EverythingThe new iPhone XS will start at $999 for the 64 GB model, while the 256 GB model will go for $1,149. The 512 GB model is a whopping $1,349. Needless to say, you'll have to pay tax as well. You'll also probably want AppleCare+, of which there are two types this time (regular and one with lost/theft coverage), and you'll need to consider carrier costs you'll pay later in addition to your regular bill, such as upgrade fees.Price: $999 (64 GB), $1,149 (256 GB), or $1,349 (512 GB) plus tax AppleCare+: $199 or $299 (optional) For an iPhone XS at 256 GB, you're looking at at least $100 in tax you'll need to pay in addition to the $1,149 price tag. Then, there's AppleCare+ for $199 (unless you go all out for the lost/theft protection plan of $299). If you use the iPhone Upgrade Program, only tax and first month's payment is due right away. For instance, when I purchased the iPhone X last year via the iPhone Upgrade Program, the iPhone itself was $1,149, but I also had AppleCare+ for $199. Also, the first month of the iPhone Upgrade Program was $56.16, and tax came out to $101.11, both which were due immediately while the rest was financed at zero percent. My carrier also hit me with a $30 upgrade fee later.Buy the New iPhone XS: Best Buy | Walmart | Other Stores
BodyJust like the iPhone X, the iPhone XS has a "surgical-grade" stainless steel metal frame with glass on both the front and rear of the device. The glass on the rear aids in wireless charging, which is necessary for Apple to make its yet-released AirPower wireless charging station fly off the shelves when the time comes. Aside from that, the XS comes in three color options: space gray, silver, and gold.Frame: stainless steel Finish: space gray, silver, gold The whole design is free of mercury, arsenic, brominated flame retardant, PVC, and beryllium, and it includes stainless steel that's recyclable. It also has a low-carbon process. While that sounds well for the body, we won't mention anything about how Apple sources the materials needed to make an iPhone, nor how it goes about recycling them later.
BasicsThe dimensions of the iPhone XS are the same as the iPhone X, so if you're upgrading from the X, the case you have will already work for the XS. As for dust and water protection, it has an "Ingress Protection" rating of 6 for debris, meaning it's entirely dustproof, and 8 for liquids, meaning it can be submerged in water up to 2 meters for up to 30 minutes. For the cellular connection, the big four providers will be supported, with tinier outfits like US Cellular and Cricket following suit soon after.Height: 5.65 inches Width: 2.79 inches Depth: 0.30 inches Weight: 6.24 ounces Dust/water resistance: IP68 under IEC standard 60529 Supported carriers: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon When it comes to environmental requirements for operating, the iPhone XS works in normal conditions from freezing to the mid-nineties in the Fahrenheit scale. When powered down, it can also survive extreme temperatures from –4 degrees to up to 113 degrees.Operating temp: 32° to 95° F Nonoperating temp: -4° to 113° F Relative humidity: 5–95% noncondensing Operating altitude: up to 10,000 feet (though could be more)
DisplayWhile its bigger brother has a 6.5-inch screen, the iPhone XS has the same size as last year's iPhone X, which is 5.8 inches. But it doesn't share the same screen resolution as the iPhone X; Instead, the XS has 2436 x 1125 pixels, with a pixel density of 458 pixels per inch.Of course, just like last year's iPhone X, the XS has an OLED panel with a notch for the TrueDepth camera and speaker. The only iPhone released in 2018 to have an LCD panel is the iPhone XR, the cheaper 6.1-inch model of the three released. The screen-to-body ratio is likely an excellent 81.1% while the aspect ratio is 19.5:9, a great ratio for watching widescreen movies. As for the rest of the details, its brightness can go from 2 to 625 nits, it has a refresh rate of 60 Hz for video but 120 Hz for touch-sensing, it has a million to one contrast ratio, and the color temperature could be 6,883 K just like the X was. Plus, it has an oleophobic coating that protects the display from fingerprints. While rumors speculated that 3D Touch would be gone in these iPhone generations, the XS does indeed come equipped with 3D Touch in the display, which allows for pressure-sensitive gestures used to access Quick Actions for apps, peek at items and pop them into full view, make thin or thick lines when drawing based on how much pressure you apply, and more.Screen size: 5.8 inches Screen resolution: 2436 x 1125 pixels Pixel density: 458 ppi Screen type: OLED, Super Retina HD Notch: yes Screen-to-body ratio: 81.1 percent Aspect ratio: 19.5:9 Minimum brightness: 2 nits Maximum brightness: 625 nits Refresh rate: 60 Hz (120 Hz for touch-sensing) Color temperature: 6,883 K 3D Touch: yes
PerformanceUnlike its predecessor which only had 3 GB of RAM, the XS has one more gig for a total of 4 GB. The chip in the unit is Apple's A12 Bionic, which has a 64-bit architecture (the new standard for iPhones). Last year's A11 Bionic also had integrated M11 motion coprocessor that dealt with data from the accelerometer, gyroscope, and other related sensors, but we haven't seen anything about that this time, though we suspect it's built in. The Apple-designed 2.496 GHz CPU has six cores, and the GPU has four cores, and there's Apple's "next-generation Neural Engine" for machine learning.Memory: 4 GB RAM Processor: Apple A12 Bionic with 64-bit architecture Chip size: 7 nanometer Coprocessor: unknown CPU frequency: 2.496 GHz CPU cores: 6 GPU: Apple-designed (unknown model) GPU cores: 4
BatteryWith a decent 2,658 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery, you can expect about the same performance as the battery life of the iPhone X, even though the latter had a bigger 2,716 mAh one. That means maximums of roughly 20 hours for talk time, 12 for internet use, 14 for video playback, and 60 for audio playback. The battery can be charged via the standard Lightning to USB cable with a computer or power adapter, as well as fast-charged using a Lightning to USB-C cable with an appropriate wall adapter. The latter will get you about 50% battery in about 30 minutes. Charging can also be done wirelessly with any Qi-certified charging pad, such as Apple's yet-to-be-released AirPower wireless charging station.Battery: rechargeable lithium-ion Capacity: 2,658 mAh, 3.81 volts (10.13 watt-hours)
Front CameraJust like last year's iPhone X, the iPhone XS has a 7 MP TrueDepth camera system in the front at the top of the display, its primary purpose being for Face ID, Apple's facial recognition software that is the successor to the Touch ID fingerprint sensor. It's capable of shooting in Portrait and Portrait Lighting mode, with what Apple calls "advanced bokeh" and "Depth Control," as well 1080p HD video recording. It's also used for Animoji and Memoji; has an Æ’/2.2 aperture, "Retina Flash" module (which turns the screen into one giant flash), backside illumination sensor, wide color capture for photos and Live Photos, and auto image stabilization; and supports Smart HDR, Burst mode, exposure control, and Timer mode.It also can detect body, faces, winks, and tongues. Plus, for videos, you get cinematic video stabilization which aids in improving the video quality, as well as extended dynamic range for 30 fps video.Resolution: 7 MP Aperture: Æ’/2.2 Zoom: no Flash: screen-based Image stabilization: software-based RAW support: no Object detection: bodies, faces, winks, tongues
Rear CameraThe rear 12 MP camera has two lenses, a wide-angle and telephoto, the former with an Æ’/1.8 aperture, the latter with an Æ’/2.4. Thanks to the telephoto lens, it supports two-times magnification for optical zoom, with digital zoom that goes up to ten times. Both lenses have optical image stabilization for more in-focus handheld shots, and there's a six-element lens for more accurate photos and a sapphire crystal lens cover for durability. The flash is a "quad LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync" designed to correct the ambient lighting for more accurate flesh tones and to provide more uniformly lit backgrounds and foregrounds. And just like the front camera, you can shoot in Portrait and Portrait Lighting mode with advanced bokeh and "Depth Control" which lets you adjust depth in an image after the fact. There's also the backside illumination sensor, wide color capture for photos and Live Photos, exposure control, body and face detection, Timer and Burst modes, Smart HDR with improved local tone mapping, auto image stabilization, and advanced red-eye detection. The rear camera can shoot panoramas up to 63 MP in size, includes a hybrid infrared filter, uses noise reduction, and supports geotagging. There's also Live Photos with stabilization and "Focus Pixels," the latter of which is used for autofocus and manual focus (by tapping). And while it can shoot RAW images, it can only do so with third-party apps, not the stock Camera app. Otherwise, you're looking at the standard PNG for screenshots and standard JPEG for photos, as well as Apple's newer High-Efficiency Image File Format.Resolution: 12 MP Aperture: Æ’/1.8 (wide-angle) and Æ’/2.4 (telephoto) Zoom: 2x optical, 10x digital Flash: Quad-LED True Tone flash with Slow Sync Image stabilization: optical, both lenses RAW support: yes Lens cover: sapphire crystal Object detection: bodies, faces Formats: HEIF, JPEG, RAW As for video recording, you can shoot videos in either 720p, 1080p, or 4K resolution with a max frame rate of 60 frames per second (30 for 720p). When shooting in 720p or 1080p, you also get cinematic video stabilization which aids in improving the video quality. For slow-motion footage, you can shoot at 1080p in either 120 fps or 240 fps. And if you want to take a photo while filming, you can take an 8 MP image while on the 4K setting, though the resolution may be smaller on lower settings. When filming, you can also choose between 2x optical zoom and up to 6x digital zoom. The Quad-LED True Tone flash also kicks in when you need it, though Slow Sync does not work for videos. Video can also make use of the optical image stabilization, body and face detection, and sapphire crystal lens cover, as well as noise reduction, geotagging, continuous autofocus, and zoom abilities when playing back footage. It also has stereo sound when recording.Videos are shot in either H.264 format or H.265 (High-Efficiency Video Coding).Resolution: 720p, 1080p, and 4K Max frame rate: 30 fps for 720p, 60 fps for 1080p and 4K Slow motion: yes, 1080p at 120 or 240 fps Time-lapse: yes, with stabilization Photos: 8 MP stills while recording 4K Zoom: 2x optical, 6x digital Flash: Quad-LED True Tone flash Image stabilization: optical Lens cover: sapphire crystal Object detection: bodies, faces Audio: stereo sound Formats: H.264, H.65 (HEVC)
AudioThere's no headphone jack here, which is no surprise, and you don't get a Lightning to 3.5 mm headphone jack adapter this time. And there are stereo speakers in the front, which use the bottom firing speakers and speaker near the TrueDepth camera. According to Apple, the audio emits wider, for a fuller sound. There are also built-in microphones near both speakers, as well as one in the camera lens on the rear of the device.According to Apple, the iPhone XS supports AAC-LC, HE-AAC, HE-AAC v2, Protected AAC, MP3, Linear PCM, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), and Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+) formats.3.5 mm headphone jack: no Stereo speakers: yes Mics: three total (on rear, front, and bottom) Max speaker volume: unknown
SensorsThe XS has all the standard sensors you'd expect from a smartphone these days.In the US, assisted GPS is included for maps and navigation, among other things — a vital part in "Location Services" in iOS, which also uses Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and cellular towers — while there's GLONASS, Galileo, and QZSS for Russia, Europe, and Japan, respectively. The accelerometer senses the movement and tilt of your device; This helps to rotate your display orientation. There's also the three-axis gyroscope, which "measures the rate at which [the] device rotates around a spatial axis," according to Apple. Together, these two sensors determine when your device is going up/down, left/right, or forward/backward, as well as how it's rotating along its x, y, and z axes. These are necessary for a lot of games and especially augmented reality. The built-in proximity sensor detects when objects are close to the screen, which is useful for shutting the display off with your ear against the built-in speaker for a call or when your iPhone is face down and doesn't need the screen to wake at all.The magnetometer in the iPhone XS provides "measurements of the Earth's magnetic field relative to the device," according to Apple. You can get elevation data (like in the Compass app) and measure air pressure with the barometer. And the ambient light sensor detects how much light is around to adjust your screen brightness accordingly. And in order to track your steps with the Health app, to keep you fit, it has a pedometer. It may not be as accurate as pedometers found on the Apple Watch or Fitbit watches, but it works fairly well.Sensors: aGPS, barometer, accelerometer, three-axis gyroscope, proximity sensor, magnetometer, barometer, digital compass, pedometer
ConnectivityJust like any other smartphone on the market, the iPhone XS has Wi-Fi and cellular support, and it includes Bluetooth 5.0 technology so you can connect wirelessly to car stereos, headsets, remote shutters, and other Bluetooth accessories.A Near Field Communication chip reads data from electronic tags or real-world objects like toys, in-store signs, and store products in supported apps.In addition, the iPhone XS also sports a dual-SIM card tray, meaning you can have two SIM cards in your XS at all times. Actually, one is a nano SIM while the second can be an eSIM. With two SIMs, you can have two cell phone numbers at once to keep your personal and work life separate, two name just one use-case.Wi-Fi: 802.11ac with 2 x 2 MIMO antenna Bluetooth: 5.0 NFC: yes Cellular: dual Nano-SIM card tray, Gigabit-class LTE with 4x4 MIMO and LAA Port: Lightning Other: iBeacon microlocation, AirPlay, AirDrop As for the wireless bands, there are two models, and both work with CDMA and GSM networks, and one that does not support CDMA networks such as Sprint or Verizon.Model A1920FDD-LTE bands 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 25, 26, 29, 30, 32, 66, 71 TD-LTE bands 34, 38, 39, 40, 41, 46 CDMA EV-DO Rev. SecurityThanks to Apple's TrueDepth camera system, the XS uses Face ID for facial recognition instead of Touch ID, just like the iPhone X did, to unlock apps, services, and your device. There is a one in a million chance that someone could break into your iPhone — unless they are your twin, of course. With Face ID, you can also use Apple Pay to make purchases online and in stores with connected cards or your Apple Pay Cash balance.Security: Face ID It also comes with a USB restricted mode that prevents unwanted devices from connecting to the iPhone and stealing data, requiring you to use your passcode (not Face ID) to give access to a computer or other device. Learn more.
SoftwareJust like the other 2018 iPhone models, the XS comes with iOS 12 built in, which every iPhone model from the iPhone 5S on up supports. Given recent records for Apple's software support cycle, it's possible that the iPhone XS might make it all the way to support iOS 17 in 2023. If not, it will definitely max out at iOS 16 in 2022.Software: iOS 12 and higher With iOS 12 as the default operating system, you'll get FaceTime video calling using either Wi-Fi or cellular, FaceTime audio, voice over LTE (VoLTE), and Wi-Fi calling. There's also, obviously, full Siri support. And the device supports audio playback of AAC-LC, HE-AAC, HE-AAC v2, Protected AAC, MP3, Linear PCM, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital (AC-3), Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3), and Audible (formats 2, 3, 4, Audible Enhanced Audio, AAX, and AAX+) files. As for video playback, there's HEVC, H.264, MPEG-4 Part 2, and Motion JPEG, as well as High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10 content. It also supports many languages for the system, the QuickType keyboard, Siri, dictation, dictionaries, and spell check — too many to list here. If you're living in the US, it's got everything you need, trust us.

News: Sending Photos in Messages Just Got Way More Annoying in iOS 12

While there are many awesome features in iOS 12, there's one that has got the best of me and my patience. Sending photos and videos in a text or iMessage. Yes, there are a few ways the process remains the same, but if you select pics and vids right from within the Message app, be prepared to be annoyed ... highly annoyed. Before I get a ton of responses about how this hasn't changed at all, let me say that nothing is different when you're in the Photos app; Select a pic or video, tap the share icon, then "Message" in the share sheet. It will do the same thing as always, opening up a compose message screen with the media embedded. All it needs from you is a recipient and, if you want, a written message to go with it.What I'm talking about is sending your photos and videos from within the Messages app directly. Before, you'd tap the camera button next to the text input field, then choose "Photo Library" to select what you want from your Photos app.Don't Miss: 100+ Cool New iOS 12 Features You Didn't Know About for iPhone Well, Apple has made this whole process different, so tapping the camera icon next to the input field in a thread no longer gives you the option to choose from your Photos library. I've been running iOS 12 since the very first developer beta in June, and EVERY SINGLE TIME, habit gets the best of me. I tap the camera icon, which just opens the camera with all its new effects (which the Photos app can't use). This wouldn't be such a big deal if choosing photos and videos within a Messages thread hadn't been the exact same process since MMS became supported on iPhones back in iPhone OS 3. Yes, it was that far back, before iOS was even called iOS, that you would just tap the camera icon to select from your Photos library. Now, be prepared to tap more times than you did before. You're likely to keep tapping that camera icon for months, at least, then closing out of the camera you didn't want to select the Photos app icon in the App Drawer for Messages, which is now the location in iOS 12's Messages app that houses your already-taken media. Maybe one day my brain will be retrained to tap the Photos icon instead of the camera icon, but it's been almost three months, and it hasn't yet. It's even more frustrating when you like to hide the App Drawer. Sigh.More Info: Access Your Photo Library in Messages for iOS 12 to Send Already Taken Pics & VidsFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Sign up for Gadget Hacks' daily newsletter or weekly Android and iOS updates Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard

News: Chromecast App Gets a Huge UpdateHere's All the Cool New Features

News: Chromecast App Gets a Huge UpdateHere's All the Cool New Features
Google just announced a new and improved Chromecast at an event in San Francisco this morning, and debuted a new "Chromecast Audio" for streaming music directly to any speaker. I'm sure you rushed off to the Google Store to buy one of these promising and powerful devices, but while you wait on the new one to come in the mail, your old Chromecast just got a lot more functional by way of a simple app update. This update to the existing Chromecast app brings a revamped look and a handful of useful new features to Android and iOS devices.Install or update Chromecast from the Google Play Store Install or update Chromecast from the iOS App Store

What's OnBy far the biggest front-facing change in the new Chromecast app is a "What's On" tab, which is now the default landing page. From here, you'll see a list of content that's available on the various Chromecast-compatible apps you have installed on your device, which serves as an awesome starting point. The search bar across the top of the screen allows you to find TV shows, movies, video clips, and music that is available on the apps and services you have installed. Once you select any content, you'll get a brief overview, where you can tap "Watch" to view the clip in-app, show, or movie and connect to your Chromecast.

Get AppsThe next big change you'll notice in the new Chromecast app is a "Get Apps" section, which lists Chromecast-compatible apps in various sub-categories. There are sections for games, music, movies, and curated lists of staff picks, and tapping any of the entries takes you directly to your device's app store. One thing you might notice is that Spotify is listed as a Chromecast-compatible music app—in fact, it has its own spot at the top of this section. This is a bit misleading, though, as Spotify will only be compatible with the new 2015 Chromecast and Chromecast Audio at first, with the original version getting compatibility in "the next few weeks."

Devices & BackdropOne of the most alluring features of the Chromecast has always been the beautiful background images it displays when idle. Google calls these the "Backdrop," and the new Chromecast app has some cool tricks up its sleeve with regards to this feature. To try some of them out, start by heading to the "Devices" tab. While you're here, you may notice that you can now control playback and volume with new buttons that you'll find under any active Chromecast. But to get to the new Backdrop options, tap the gear-shaped icon near the top-right corner of the screen, then choose the "Backdrop" option. From here, you'll see three new sources for custom Backdrop images—Facebook, Flickr, and Play Newsstand. To get Backdrop images from any of these sources, enable the option, then press "Connect" and log in with your account info. From now on, you'll be able to see your Facebook feed, Flickr photos, and Play Newsstand subscriptions right on your big screen.

Cast Screen/AudioFinally, the "Cast Screen" section in the side navigation menu has been renamed to "Cast screen/audio." This is mainly to reflect compatibility with the new Chromecast Audio stick, which doesn't have an HDMI output. Either way, the functionality here is still basically the same, since you just tap the "Cast Screen/Audio" button, then select any Chromecast device to start streaming your display and/or any music that's playing. Will you be purchasing the new 2015 Chromecast model, or is the updated app enough to keep you going for the time being? Let us know in the comment section below, or drop us a line on Facebook, Google+, or Twitter.
