How To: This Innocent Calculator Is Really a Secret App Safe for Android
Trust can be a touchy subject in general, and is often required when sharing personal information—especially so when handing our phones over to others. You may not have a ton of secret or nefarious information on your device, but that doesn't mean you want your mom or snoopy coworker having easy access to your messages or Facebook app.Locking applications can help, but then you're left explaining to someone why your Gmail or Instagram apps are locked, and if it's a significant other, well, now you've got some explaining to do.Instead of locking apps, simply hide them so the conversation never takes place. The best way I've found to do that is by hiding them in an innocent-looking app, and what could be more innocent than a calculator? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Note that the hiding function is accomplished by "freezing" apps, which essentially removes them from your visible app list while not actually removing them from your device. The process of freezing requires deep system access, and for that reason, your Android device must be rooted.

Step 1: Install Smart Hide CalculatorDeveloper Inderdeep Singh, known as IDSstudio in the Android world, created a fully functional calculator that's really an app hider called Smart Hide Calculator, which can be downloaded for free from the Google Play Store.

Step 2: Set Your PasscodeThe first time you open Smart Hide Calculator, you'll notice it says Set Password up top. Enter a passcode, then hit the equals sign (=) and confirm it. After setting your passcode, you'll be prompted to create a backup code, just in case.
Forgot Your Passcode? If you ever forget your passcode, enter the password recovery mode by entering 123456789+987654321 in the calculator, followed by the equals sign (=).

Step 3: Start Hiding AppsTo hide apps, just select the Freeze Apps option, then select apps from a list of the ones you have installed. They will disappear from your app drawer and appear as if they're no longer installed. Be aware that any locked-apps will still show as shortcuts on your home screen, although they will not be accessible (showing an "App Not Installed" message). When you're ready to use your hidden apps again, simply enter your passcode and select "Un-Freeze Apps."
Note About Hiding FilesYou can also hide files, though, many have stated that using this function actually deleted the files off their system, or made them very difficult to find and/or get back. If you decide to go this route, be aware of the issues others have run in to. Personally, I only use this app only for hiding apps. All in all, Smart Hide Calculator does the job to hide apps you don't want others to have free access to. Let us know what you think in the comments below as well as on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

As it turns out, the new Clock and Calculator apps from stock Android 5.1 can actually be installed on other devices just like you would with any other app. There's one stipulation, though: these new versions will only install on an Android 5.1 device, and obviously the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are still running 5.0.2.

These apps are popular because they help a student to hide their behavior from their parents.

How To: Use Instant Apps on Android

How To: Use Instant Apps on Android
One of the best parts of being an Android user is the countless awesome features. Many of these features are well-known and user-facing, like custom icon packs and launchers, but some get lost in the shuffle. Back at Google I/O 2016, Android Instant Apps were introduced to developers and enthusiasts. Since then, the feature has seen a wider rollout, but few users are aware of it.If you're out and about, the last thing you want to do is download a large app. At the same time, you often discover an app that would benefit you right now, at this very moment. This is where Android Instant Apps come in to play. With Instant Apps, you don't need to download the large APK file to use the core functionality of the app or service. Sound too good to be true? It's actually incredibly easy to enable and use Instant Apps on any phone running Android 6.0 or higher.Don't Miss: How to Get Google Play Instant Apps & Games Working

Step 1: Enable Instant AppsFirst up, you'll need to make sure Instant Apps are enabled on your phone. So head into your phone's main Settings menu, then scroll down and tap on "Google." From here, scroll down and tap on "Instant Apps." Next, tap the toggle at the top to turn the feature on. You will be prompted with a dialog box explaining what Instant Apps are — simply select "Yes, I'm in." Now you're ready to try out your first Instant App!

Step 2: Find an Instant App and Run It!The only unfortunate aspect of Instant Apps is the small number of available apps with the feature built in. We're still in the early days, but the list is growing every week. Some of the more popular apps available right now are Vimeo, Jet, and The New York Times Crossword Puzzle. The easiest way to locate Instant apps is through the Google Play Store. While perusing the Play Store for new apps, you'll notice that some of them now have a button that says "Try Now." This indicates that the app has an Instant App associated with it. Tapping on the "Try Now" button will open and run the Instant App, saving you cellular data and storage space on your phone!

Step 3: Manage Instant App DataOnce you've used an Instant App, it will be stored inside a list in that Google Instant Apps Settings page you accessed earlier. This makes it easy to clear individual app data, or even install the full version of the app once you are back on a Wi-Fi connection. You may also notice that if someone sends you a link that would normally open in the full version of an app, it will now open in the Instant App. The best example of this is Vimeo videos. Overall, Instant Apps are pretty awesome. We certainly want to see Google continue supporting this idea, and more app developers jumping on board. If most of the popular app developers supported Instant Apps, users could save a large chunk of storage space. Have you ever tried Instant Apps on your Android phone? Are you thinking about giving it a try now? Let us know what you think of this feature in the comments below!Don't Miss: How to Install Apps from the Play Store Without Gapps or Google ServicesFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Reorder Profiles & Reset Matches in Tinder

How To: Reorder Profiles & Reset Matches in Tinder
The modern age of techno-dating has made an interesting landscape for social interactions when there is some modicum of romance (or lust). For those of us born before the internet evolved into the prolific monster it has become, we first met our love interests face to face. Today, however, apps like Tinder have changed the introductory stage, for better or worse.Tinder directly interfaces with Facebook. After pulling information from your account, Tinder will be essentially ready to go by the time you finish writing a clever bio and uploading your best pictures. By setting parameters for your preferred matches (i.e., gender preference(s), maximum distance from your location, and age range), a right swipe could transpose into a date sometime in the future. The thing is, there's a bit of a strategy to getting matches based on how the app actually works, beyond how much wit you packed into a pickup line. We're going to take a brief look at how the app functions and ways to adjust one of the more pressing issues—the various ways to "reset" Tinder.
Understanding Potential Matches & How Tinder Really WorksThe Tinder algorithm has several built-in functions that determine how the application operates. From a user perspective, this affects the frequency in which your profile appears for other users, as well as how others appear in your list.Don't Miss:High There, a Dating App For Weed Smokers (Because Potheads Need Love, Too)In a basic sense, Tinder assigns each user a score based on desirability. This takes into account several components, such as how many have "liked" the individual's profile, their activity on the app, and the completeness of the profile. Similar to how an online match for Call of Duty attempts to pair users of equal skill, based on availability, so does Tinder attempt to match users of similar desirability.Beyond your score, Tinder takes into account two other important factors when arranging your list of potential matches each time you open the application. Users in close proximity will populate, with some variability, first in your list. Furthermore, those who have already liked you appear earlier in your list. For a number of reasons, there are times when you might want to reset your Tinder app to get a fresh start. So below, I'll cover two methods that will cause the Tinder app to give you a new list of potential matches.

Method 1: Soft ResetEvery time you open Tinder, users in your defined parameter settings will populate in your list of profiles to swipe. Sometimes you will encounter a profile where you won't want to swipe left, making this person disappear forever, yet you don't want to engage the person, should you match at this point in time. Often, it's an odd situation when a silent match from months ago suddenly decides to speak up. Occasionally, timing isn't always the best for both parties. So to perform a soft reset of Tinder, simply close out the application, then swipe it away from your recent apps menu to ensure it's not running in the background. Alternatively, you can go into Tinder's settings and modify the age range of people you're seeking by a year (either the minimum or maximum), and this will perform the same function. Keep in mind, as previously stated, those who have liked you and are closest to your location will populate early in your list. This will give you a good idea of who's interested before you invest in a right swipe. (1) Swiping Tinder away from the recent apps list to do a soft reset. (2) Modifying age range to refresh the list of potential matches. Another way to fix these issues is simply to sign up for a Tinder Plus subscription within the application. This opens up a ton of other options, such as hiding ads, the ability to change your location, a feature that shows you the most active users first, and an option to rewind your last swipe for those "oops" moments.

Method 2: Hard ResetIf you find yourself in a situation where you've managed to swipe left on too many potentially interesting people, there's no real way to backpedal. If you want to start fresh, you'll need to completely delete your account and start from scratch. However, there's a bit more to it than simply uninstalling the application.First, open the application on your smartphone and sign in, if requested. Find your profile by tapping on the silhouette in the upper-left corner, then choosing the "Settings" option. From there, scroll all the way to the bottom and select "Delete Account," then confirm your choice. Next, you'll need to delete the app from inside Facebook. Open Facebook in a browser on your computer and navigate to the Settings area found in the drop-down menu on the right of the menu bar. You'll find all your apps in the appropriately-named "Apps" section in the left menu. From here, find Tinder and hover over the app icon until a gray box appears. Click the "X" in the corner to remove Tinder. Finally, it's a good idea to flush the Facebook cache from your phone. The easiest way to do this is to uninstall the application, then download and install it again after restarting your device (this works for both iOS and Android).By following these instructions, you'll be able to reset the people appearing in your Tinder application, either by reordering those who appear in your feed or completely resetting your activity all together. Hopefully, you'll find that a fresh start was exactly what you needed for a more fruitful Tinder experience!Don't Miss: How to Get Facebook's Geo-Restricted Snapchat Clone 'Flash' on Any Android PhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Android Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Add, Customize & Animate Text Layers in Your Videos with Enlight Videoleap for iPhone

How To: Add, Customize & Animate Text Layers in Your Videos with Enlight Videoleap for iPhone

Typography is an important aspect of the video editing process. You deal with it when adding captions to news clips, giving on-screen recipes in food videos, creating burned-in subtitles for short films, making no-sound-needed videos for social media, and so much more. Enlight Videoleap for iOS makes this all easy.If you're going to use Enlight Videoleap to add text to your videos on your iPhone, it's important to do it not only correctly, but also at a high level, to better convey your message and engage your audience. Videoleap's text tools include adjustments for fonts, animations, effects, colors, spacing, alignment, and a lot more. We'll cover each tool one by one and give you the basics to how to make your text live on the screen like it's meant to be there. But first, make sure you've updated "Enleap Videoleap Video Editor" so you've got all the new tools and features.

Step 1: Overlay the Text on Your VideoI'll assume you already have a video project loaded into your Videoleap timeline that you text overlayed on. However, you can also start a blank project without any video, which is useful if you want to create a title card with a simple black background, but we'll be using actual video as an example throughout this guide.Without any video clips highlighted, move the playhead to where you want the text to start (you can always change this later, of course), then tap on "Text" button in the toolbar. This will add a new layer on top of any video below it (or empty area, if you want a black background), and a text box will appear in the preview. To add text, do what it says and double-tap in the box to bring up your keyboard. Type in whatever it is that you need or want to appear overlayed on the video. Use the return key to create a line break if needed. Tap on the check mark or anywhere outside of the text box to save the text. Now, you can position the text to where it looks best. Tap-and-hold on the text box, then drag it to where you want it. To angle the text, turn it sideways, or make it upside-down, place one finger near the outside of the box and another finger opposite it on the other side, then turn your fingers until it's situated like you want. To make increase or decrease the size, pinch out or pinch in, respectively.
Step 2: Customize the Overlayed TextThere are over a dozen tools that you can use to customize the look and feel of the text in your videos. We'll go through each one below so you see how they work. To find these tools, just make sure the text layer is highlighted (the layer will have a white border the text box a red border).

1. Change Your Text's Font StyleThe first item in the text toolbar is "Font," a recent addition to Videoleap, which includes over 35 different styles such as Open Sans, Script, and Gothic. Each font has different spacing and sizes, so you'll have to change the size and position of the text box as described in Step 1 to have it fit on the screen where you want.

2. Add Transitions & AnimationsThe next tool is "Animation," which is a bit more extensive than the rest. With it, you can add a beginning transition or ending transition, as well as an animated effect to the whole entire text layer. Tap on "Animation," select "In," "Overall," or "Out" to choose where you want the animation to appear. And it's not an either-or situation, you can choose effects from all three if you want. The same animated transitions appear for "In" and "Out," including fade in or out; slide up, down, right, or left; scale up or down; spin clockwise or counterclockwise; and flicker. For the "Overall" animation, you can choose from a blinking, pulsing, floating, spinning, or wiggling effects. Once you select one, slide the marker beneath the video to either change its length (for transitions) or speed (for overall effects).

3. Add Animated Effects"Effects" lets you choose from six different animated effects, including ones that make your text look like it's on fire, a color-changing neon sign, or wires with electricity flowing through them. As for the other three effects, they are only included in the pro version of the app, which costs either $5.99 per month, $35.99 per year, or $69.99 for forever.

4. Change Your Text's ColorNext in the toolbar is "Color," which, as you can imagine, lets you change the color of the text — even if it already has an effect on it. You have nearly 30 different colors to choose from, but you can't change the color of individual letters or characters in the text box, only as a whole.

5. Blend Your Text into the VideoHere, I'm going to cover two different tools because they're very similar. First, "Opacity," which lets you slide the marker up or down to change the text's transparency so that you can see some of the video below through the text. The "Blending" tool works the same as opacity, especially if you have the "Normal" option selected. Slide the marker up or down to make the text less or more see-through. Where it differs from the previous tool is that there are more options to choose from. If you've ever used Adobe Photoshop before on a computer, it's just like its drop-down menu for the blending mode of a layer. There are options for soft light, darken, overlay, and color burn, to name a few. The difference between them is how the text box looks: splotchy, dark, burned, and so on. And just like before, you can move the marker up or down on the slider to adjust the opacity. Technically, we think the "Opacity" tool should just disappear since it does the same thing as adjusting the slider in any of the "Blending" modes. But it does serve as a nice reminder of what the opacity for any mode just by glancing at the toolbar.

6. Mask Your Text Behind On-Screen ObjectsWith the "Mask" tool, you can hide some of the text, which makes it look like the text is behind an object in the video. For a real-world example, Hulu's The Act utilizes this effect in every show of the series. In Videoleap, you have different mask tools (linear, mirror, radial, and rectangle) to play around with that can better hide your text, depending on the shapes in your video. Now, this tool is pretty tricky to work with, since there's a lot of pinching involved. When you select a mask tool, you'll see a center circle which is where your text will remain visible for sure. From there, if you chose the linear mask tool, you can move it around and use two fingers to spin it how you need it. Then you can move the arrows further away from the line to spread the effect out with opacity changes away from the line. For the other tools, you can also move them around, spin them with two fingers, and add opacity to the text outside of the effect box, but you can also pinch in or out the effect. Additionally, on the rectangular mask tool, you can drag the arc icon to cut the text off a little inside the effect box. To get the hang of this all, you'll just have to play around with it. But since you're subject may be moving, you'll want to add keyframes too, which we'll discuss later in Step 3.

7. Add a Stroke Around Your TextThe "Stroke" tool adds an outline around the text. You can change the width of the outline, from zero to 10 points, as well as the color of the stroke.

8. Add a Shadow to Your Text"Shadow" adds a drop-shadow behind your text. A red circle will appear, which is the center of the shadow. If you move the circle around, it moves the shadow as well, so it can be directly behind the text, a little off-center, or way away from the text. You can change the opacity (its transparency), softness (for the edges of the shadow text), and color of the shadow (if black isn't what you want). You can also choose to hide it, which is better than deleting it if you think you'll like to use the shadow you customized later.

9. Make Your Text Stand Out with a BackgroundThe "Background" tool places a colored or transparent background behind your text. With the "Shape" sub-tool, you can make the background fill the text box, appear as a strip across the video, or turn it into a hollow outline. The "Color" sub-tool is pretty self-explanatory, as well as "Opacity," which just lets the video in the other layer shine through. The "Size" sub-tool determines how large the background or outline is, while the "Softness" will make the box rigid at zero or a complete blur at 100.

10. Adjust Your Text's Alignment & SpacingTap on "Align" to change the alignment of the text to either left, center, or right justification, and use "Spacing" to squeeze the text together or give it room to breathe, as well as to create a larger or smaller gap between lines, if the text is divided that way.

11. Prioritize Text Layers That OverlapWith the "Arrange" tool, you can place the text behind or on top of other text layers. However, with the free version of Videoleap, you're restricted to just three layers, so the "Arrange" tool isn't incredibly useful unless you've only got a few text layers you're attempting to organize.

12. Split Your Text Up into Two ClipsUse "Split" to break up the text clip and move it to a different place in the video. When I say split, I mean it cuts the text clip in half, not the actual text in the text box. Simply move the playhead to the moment you want to split the text and hit "Split." You can then tap-and-hold either portion of the text clip and move it across your project timeline where needed.

13. Duplicate Your Text Clip"Duplicate," as you probably can guess, creates an identical twin of the text clip. This adds an extra layer to your project, but there are only three layers available in the free version, so you can't really use this tool as freely as you would with the pro version. You can, however, move it around like with when using the "Split" tool above.

14. Delete Your Text Clip to Try AgainFinally, you can tap on Remove to delete the text layer. You can also tap-and-hold down on the text layer in the timeline, then drag and drop it down in the trash can that appears to erase it. If you delete it because you're unhappy with the results, you always go back and try again from scratch.

Step 3: Use the Keyframe Tool to Animate TextWith any effect selected, or even just the text layer itself, you'll see a diamond symbol with a plus sign above the toolbar on the right whenever the playhead is in the layer somewhere. This is the "Keyframe" tool, which is used to add manual animation to your text. You can use it to move text from one part of the video to another or change the color of the text throughout, for example. News: 5 Reasons Why Fortnite Avoiding the Play Store Is a Terrible Idea

News: 5 Reasons Why Fortnite Avoiding the Play Store Is a Terrible Idea
After getting confirmation from Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, we now know Fortnite Battle Royale will not be available on the Play Store when it's finally released for Android. Instead, users will have to download the APK directly from Epic Games' website — and quite frankly, this is a bad idea.By not distributing on the Play Store, Epic Games is increasing their chances for a number of problems. The big one is malware, where users will unknowingly download fake copies of the game's APK, leading to unintended consequences such as the loss of their data. It also complicates the procedure unnecessarily for new Android users who don't know about sideloading.Updates will also be an interesting process, since sideloaded apps can't be automatically updated via the Play Store. Instead, Epic Games will have to come up with a workaround. Also, Google's built-in provisions for in-app purchases will not work, which is very important for a game whose revenue comes primarily from in-app purchases. For all the complication and confusion, it simply doesn't make sense.Don't Miss: Fortnite Battle Royale Tips & Tricks for Mobile
Why Epic Isn't Using the Play StoreCEO Tim Sweeney spoke with The Verge regarding their decision to forgo the Play Store. According to Tim, Epic wanted to maintain a direct relationship with their customers wherever they can. Secondly, Epic didn't want to pay Google's 30% fee for all in-app purchases if they were to place the app on the Play Store. The first reason is based on the idea that whenever Epic could go the direct route, they did. Both PC and Android don't require games to be hosted on the central distribution platform (Steam for PC and the Google Play Store for Android), and in both situations, Epic Games has created their own direct pathways. The second reason is based on the idea that since Fortnite Battle Royale is free on all platforms, all their revenue is coming from in-app purchases — specifically V-bucks, which allow users to buy cosmetic items such as outfits, backpacks, and pickaxes. This strategy has been a huge success. In only 90 days of releasing the iOS version, they were able to reach $100 million in sale, the second-fastest app to do so behind Clash Royale. While it's easy to understand the reasons, the benefits don't outweigh the problems they are introducing by going this route.

1. Sideloading Can Be DangerousWhile for Android power users, sideloading may seem like a simple process that you've done countless times, it can be somewhat complicated for new users. Just like when the game was first released on iOS, Fortnite Battle Royale for Android will bring in new users who aren't as tech-savvy as others. Even with perfectly laid-out instructions, mistakes can be made. But what is more concerning is the danger of sideloading in general. One of the main reasons Android disables the feature by default is because apps outside of the Play Store can be malicious. APKs can come from any source and be posted by anyone. While the majority of the Android community are wholesome people who try to help new users, there is a portion of people who use Android's open-source nature for their own benefit. They can create fake apps that look like the real Fortnite game but are, in fact, something else. Whether they fill it with ads to make a profit or steal users' data to sell on the black market, there are a number of ways to take advantage of this situation and cause harm to potential new mobile Fortnite users. Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks While the Play Store isn't perfect, it is a much more secure place. Google would be able to pull any fake apps masquerading as the real game and perform antivirus scans continuously to make sure the APK hasn't been modified by a third-party. Users reviews can steer people away from well-made duplicates which are in fact not the official game.A counter-argument can be made that, since Epic will be hosting the game on their official site, even the most novice users will know to get the APK directly from the official source. While this may be true, introducing the masses to the concept of sideloading without fully educating them on the risks can still cause problems with other APKs.

2. In-App Purchases Will Be More ComplicatedWith the Play Store, Android allows its users to save their credit card or debit card to their account for in-app purchases. This method is convenient, as your personal financial information is protected by Google but easily accessible whenever you need to make a purchase. You can even securely add third-party solutions such as PayPal or your carrier billing. However, sideloaded apps don't have access to this ability. Instead, you have to rely on the app's implementation for in-app purchases. You'll have to trust Epic Games, which is likely to offer fewer options for payment methods. And since the payment only works for Fortnite Battle Royale, it isn't as convenient as Android's built-in solution. Just like sideloading, this adds unnecessary complication to the process. New users probably already have a credit card or account saved to their Google account, but now they have to redo this process for Fortnite just because Epic wants to avoid a 30% charge.Things get even more worrisome when you consider the fake APKs that will inevitably be floating around the internet. If you have to enter credit card information in the game, a well-made fake could easily empty your bank account.

3. Updates Will Be Harder Than They Need to BeWhen an app is hosted on the Play Store, developers simply upload updates to Google's servers. The Play Store will inform users of the update, and depending on your settings, will automatically update the app for you. It is simple, fast, and designed so that even beginners will not get confused. But with sideloaded apps, you can't auto-update via the Play Store. Instead, Epic Games will have to find a workaround. It's possible they'll build this functionality into the game, but they may find it simpler to release a standalone Fortnite Updater app, which would be another app you have to sideload (and another attack surface for malware). Image by Jon Knight/Gadget Hacks Even if they build updating functionality into the Fortnite app itself, the process won't be automatic. You'll still have to open the updated APK file and expressly tap "Install," as Android won't let non-system apps install updates for you. Then there's another wrinkle for devices running Android Oreo or higher. Since you'll be downloading the game from Epic's website, the new sideloading permission will have to be granted to your browser. But unlike past Android versions, this permission isn't system-wide, it's per-app. So after enabling your browser to sideload the game, you'll also have to grant this permission to Fortnite itself to be able to install updates that were downloaded through the game.
4. Epic Doesn't Have to Comply with Play Store RulesGoogle is now requiring all new apps to target Android Oreo. This means they must take advantage of several new features introduced in Android 8.0, including better use of background data, improvements to security, and improved user control for notifications (known as Notification Channels). If Epic Games posted their app on the Play Store, it would have to abide by this rule and the host of other regulations required by every app on the Play Store.Instead, they can, for example, target a lower version of Android to save themselves time. Right now, Android Oreo is only installed on 12.1% of Android phones. By not targeting Oreo, they can avoid the hassle of implementing features that only a handful of users will be able to take advantage of.However, both targeting Oreo and the other rules of the Play Store are designed to protect you. Apps in the Play Store are subjected to a list of rules that, if broken, can lead to it being pulled. Targeting Android Oreo protect you against malware, as apps have to be built using the latest security tools. With sideloading, you instead must trust the developer to do the right thing.Don't Miss: How Google's New App Policy is Fighting Android Malware
5. It Sets a Terrible PrecedentPerhaps the biggest drawback to this whole scenario is how it's paving the way to further Android fragmentation. With Fortnite being as big as it is, other game developers will be paying close attention to how this works out for Epic.If it starts looking like users are okay with sideloading, game studios won't be as worried about missing out on potential customers by not hosting their wares on the Play Store. In fact, we could be headed for a future where Android's official app store is an afterthought. Bigger games could follow suit by launching first on iOS, then using the hype from iPhone users to promote an APK download on their site. An extra 30% profit is plenty of motivation. On the surface, Google losing some of its tight grip on the Android ecosystem might sound like a good thing. But if they start losing money because of this, they'd be motivated to make sideloading as hard and convoluted as it is on iOS.Epic Games is already forced by Apple to use the App Store for many of same reasons we mentioned here, so why not just do the same with the Play Store, even though you have options not to? What do you think about Epic Games' decision? Nova Launcher 101: How to Unlock the Hidden 'Labs' Menu for Experimental Features

Nova Launcher 101: How to Unlock the Hidden 'Labs' Menu for Experimental Features
TeslaCoil's Nova Launcher is one of the best home screen apps on the Play Store. It's about as fast as it gets, and it's always among the first to add the latest Android features. However, it looks like Nova Launcher isn't showing users all of the customization options available — apparently, there's a secret menu, and it's pretty simple to unlock.Hidden away in Nova's settings menu is a secret Labs menu. Found within this menu are experimental features that address specific issues some phones might be dealing with. After reviewing the options, you will see why many of them are hidden them away — however, there are a few gems that make this menu worth unlocking.Don't Miss: The 5 Best Custom Launchers for Android

Step 1: Unlock LabsTo reveal the Labs menu option, start by opening Nova Launcher's main settings menu. Settings is accessible by either selecting Nova Launcher Settings in the app drawer or by long-pressing any empty space on the home screen and choosing "Settings".While in settings, hold the volume down button until a toast message emerges informing you the Labs menu has been enabled. Scroll down and right below Backup & import settings will be the hidden Labs menu.

Step 2: Experiment with LabsOnce you unlock Labs, select it to reveal its contents. The options available are experimental for one reason or another, but do work a majority of the time. For example, the first option, "Allow weather in search bar," works perfectly fine, but because of issues on Google's end, TeslaCoil can't guarantee that it will always work. Therefore, they moved it to the Labs section. "Allow weather in search bar" "Bypass system icon theme" allows you to overwrite some skins' default setting which automatically adds a background to icons — instead, the icons show normally. "Big Grid Size Options" removes the limits of grid size options for the home screen.Another useful feature is the quick access to the permissions available to Nova Launcher. By selecting the "Permissions" drop-down menu near the bottom of your screen, you will have access to Nova Launcher's app permissions and the ability to adjust them accordingly. Finally, there is the "Debug" drop-down menu which provides tools for debugging the app, including the ability to clear the icon cache and email your device info to TelsaCoil for additional information.

Step 3: Hide Labs (Optional)If you don't find any useful settings after going through the Labs menu, you can hide "Labs" from Nova Launcher's settings menu again. This isn't a required step, but you may prefer a cleaner settings menu.If so, return to Nova's main settings menu and hold the volume up button until a toast appears informing you that Labs menu is disabled. After that, you're all set. Labs is a hidden gem that offers a mix of experimental features and developer options for Nova Launcher. It's hidden away so as not to confuse novice users, but can certainly help in a few niche use-cases. Did you find Labs helpful? What options did you enable? Let us know in the comments below.Don't Miss: Nova Launcher Tips & TricksFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Flipboard Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Flipboard
