How To: Make an AC Arc Welder Using Parts from an Old Microwave, Part 2

Last time, I showed how to start putting together an AC arc welder from scavenged microwave parts, focusing on the transformer modifications. Now, I'll show you how to finish up your DIY stick welding machine by fixing up the electrical system and performing the finishing touches. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
Before you watch this, make sure you've seen the first video.WARNING: Stick welding, and/or the modification of a Microwave Oven Transformer (M.O.T), can be very dangerous and presents risks of UV radiation, shock hazards, burns, fires, fumes and a multitude of other risks. This project should not be attempted without a thorough understanding of electricity, adult supervision and adequate training. Misuse, or careless use, of tools or projects may result in serious injury and/or death. Use of this content is at your own risk.I started this part of the project with a scrap piece of 3/4" birch I had left over from my "Router Table" project. The measurements for the board were 7"x10", and that keeps this about as compact as practical. I found a piece of 2x2 as well, and screwed it onto the center of the board about an inch from the edge. Two pilot holes were drilled in the top to accommodate our electrode lugs.I decided to use lugs here rather than keep it all one continuous cable, because it gives the option of changing out electrode cables, or easily modifying the electrical output for future projects. Copper lugs can be pricy, but I found that if I used a 2" length of 1/2" copper tubing, I could make my own.I used a bench vise to crimp 1" of the tubing completely flat, then drilled a hole in the flat piece. A belt sander helped to clean up the edges a bit to make it easier to handle, and make it look a bit nicer as well. For the electrode cables, I used some of the 8awg cable left over from when we wound the transformer coils.Next, I exposed the copper on the end of the cable, and bent it over so it would fit inside the lower part of the lug. I flattened it with a bench vise to make a solid electrical connection, and in my testing, the connection doesn't come apart. If you don't have a bench vise, I imagine a hammer could work with very similar results.Since the system is AC, there really is no "ground" connection and it doesn't really matter which cable connects to which side, but I decided to put a "ground" clamp on the left side, and the electrode holder on the right. I also spliced the cable between the two transformers and connected them to a common lug so I could have the option to center tap the transformers for future projects, like powering an arc furnace for example. For the clamp, I found this metal one at the hardware store for only $0.99. When the rubber tips were removed, it could conduct electricity. I crimped a piece of copper tubing to the wire, then secured the tube to the clamp with a screw. For being so cheap, the clamp had a surprising amount of clamping force, which was great for biting onto the workpiece. I bought a replacement electrode holder for $13 rather than making my own. It looked better and was much more practical for welding with.I used one of the cords saved from one of the microwaves and cut off the green wire, and secured the cable to the wood base to prevent the cables from pulling off the connections. The black cable connects to one of the primary terminals on one of the transformers, and the white wire connects to one of the other transformers primaries. It doesn't really matter which one. I used another piece of wire to connect the other 2 posts together, essentially connecting the 2 transformers in series.Later on, when the device is tested, the two electrodes should be outputting around 36 volts. If you're seeing very low voltage, like 2.4 in my case, that means the transformers are canceling each other out, and this can be fixed by just switching the connections on one of the transformers. I went ahead and did that and ended up with about 37 volts between my ground clip and electrode holder.I needed 240 volts AC to power this system, so I used 2 plugs, a connector, and some 10awg wire. Each of the outlets in my house output around 120 VAC, and the circuits all connect back to the breaker bus bars. There are 2 busses, and I learned that if I took a hot line from each bus, the electrical potential between them was 240 VAC.Rather than tapping into the breaker box directly, I used extension cords and connected to 2 different outlets that were 180 out of phase (on separate bus bars). When they were connected to my adapter, the result was 240 VAC.It's important to keep in mind that this welder doesn't have an on/off switch, and no current limiting of it's own. That's why I had to build a separate power controller I call the "Scariac". It's like a "Variac" except much more dangerous. But it is pretty cheap, and it gets the job done. Look for how to build the Scariac in a different project. To set the current for welding 1/16th rods, I connected the ground clamp and electrode holder together, effectively shorting out the system. The Scariac has a loop of wire built in that allows me to monitor the primary current, and when it's set to about 15.5 amps on the primary, it gives me around 100 amps on the secondary. Cranking up the power on the Scariac can get the welding cables up over 200 amps, but I really don't recommend running them that high for more than a few seconds or the plastic coating on the cables will overheat and may start melting. In any case, you can see there is certainly enough power for welding.I burned ten 1/16 rods in a row, and the system was only warm to the touch. This gives me the impression it's got a pretty good duty cycle for use with the smaller rods, and these are probably the only one's I'll really need for my hobby use anyway.Rather than leaving all the terminals exposed, I picked up a plastic container, painted it black, and drilled a few holes for the cables. I used the top as the base, and the bottom as the top. It seemed to work pretty well. There are also ventilation holes cut in the sides to allow airflow over the coils, and even consideration made for attaching a fan to blow cool air and help regulate the temperature while welding. At this point, the system is completely finished and ready for welding! You can see some of my first few experiences with the world of welding in the video below. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How To: Personalize Mass Text Messages on Android

How To: Personalize Mass Text Messages on Android
We've all received those impersonal mass text messages, whether we're getting invited out to a birthday party, graduation celebration, or just a group dinner or outing.Usually when I see those sort of text messages, I delete them, mostly because they're not personal. If someone really cared about inviting me out, they would at least use my name in the message right? Yeah, it might be a hassle to write out each unique message, especially if you've got a lot of friends, so why not let an application do all the work for you? Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

Step 1: Install Text BlasterWhile it's promoted as a business tool, Text Blaster, from developer Gautam Jain, allows you to automatically personalize each message with the recipient's first and/or last name when sending mass text messages.

Step 2: Create a GroupBegin by creating a new group, which should be full of contacts that you often text together. Add a group name to recognize it in the future, then hit "Create." In Text Blaster's main page, you'll find your groups, as well as how many text messages you have left to send at the top. With the free version, you can send up to 500 text messages every month, which should be more than enough for any normal person.Various other packages are available, geared mostly for marketing: Pro (1,000 texts/month for $4.95/month), Business (2,000 texts/month for $8.95/month), and Business+ (unlimited texts for $10.95/month).

Step 3: Create, Personalize, & Send TextsEnter a group and create a text. Using the + sign next to the text box, you can enter either a first name, last name, or both. A generic placeholder will appear in green, indicating the name of all your contacts. At the top right you can check out the contacts in your group, as well as add more. When you're ready to send, tap on the shield icon with the checkmark. On the next page, you'll be able to preview what each text message will look like, along with the personalized touch, depending on which format of the name you chose. When you send, you can head over to your stock Messages app to check out all your sent texts. Not only is this is a faster way of sending mass text messages, it also stops others from getting annoyed by group text messages. With Text Blaster, only you will receive text messages from recipients, thanks to the texts being sent on an individual basis and not as a group. Is Text Blaster a good alternative to personalizing text messages manually, one by one? Leave us all of your thoughts in the comments below. And make sure to follow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+ and Twitter to see more cool Android apps like this one.

How To: View All the Songs You Shazamed with Siri on Your iPhone

How To: View All the Songs You Shazamed with Siri on Your iPhone

When you hear a song you like but can't quite catch enough of its lyrics, it can be nearly impossible to search for it online. That's where Shazam comes in. For the past decade, they've been making music easier for us to identify by analyzing a track's acoustic footprint, requiring only a few seconds of audio for accurate identification.Shazam became so ubiquitous with song identification (and even TV show identification) that Apple introduced it as a native iOS 8 feature within Siri. Just activate Siri, ask her what song is playing, and in a few seconds she can recognize the artist and track playing. She even gives you the option to purchase the song through iTunes. Plus, it turns out that iOS 8 doesn't just recognize songs, but stores your entire history of Shazam tags from Siri on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

How to Locate Your Siri Shazam HistoryInside of the iTunes Store app, tap on the three-dash menu at the top right, then hit the "Siri" tab. You'll see a list of all the songs that Siri has ever identified for you, as well as a button to purchase each one from iTunes. You can wipe your entire listening history by tapping on "Clear" at the top left, but you can't yet delete on a per-song basis. However, if iTunes does not sell a song that Siri identified (there will be no "Buy" icon), it will not show up in the Siri list in iTunes, so keep that in mind. If you want to keep track of these songs, see the next section. Songs like this one won't be save in the Siri list in iTunes. Also important to note is that songs recognized through the official Shazam app will not show up in this list—only songs identified through Siri. Same deal the other way around, songs identified through Siri will not show up in the Shazam app.

How to Add Songs from Siri to Your Official Shazam ListIf you want to keep all of your songs in the same place, or keep track of songs that iTunes doesn't sell, you can store them all directly in the Shazam app. You just have to remember to add each song identified by Siri to your Shazam list manually. To do so, whenever you Shazam a song with Siri, just tap on the Shazam logo underneath the "Buy" button. The app will open and the song will be added to your list. Hit the "Shazam" logo to save it directly to Shazam. Let us know what you think about this feature in the comments, and check out more iOS tips from Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Google+, and Twitter.

ProtonMail 101: How to Send Self-Destructing Emails

ProtonMail 101: How to Send Self-Destructing Emails
When you're sending sensitive information via email, it's best to do so with end-to-end encryption. Even better, set the email to destroy itself after a set amount of time for a little piece of mind.Sending a self-destructing email message is a cinch in ProtonMail for Android or iPhone, and you're not just limited to sending them to other ProtonMail users. Any email address, no matter the service, can be sent an expiring email — it just has to use end-to-end encryption. By default, messages you send to non-ProtonMail users aren't end-to-end, but it's easy enough to do.

Step 1: Set the Expiration TimeStart by composing an email in ProtonMail on your smartphone how you normally would. Once ready to send it, tap the clock icon underneath the subject line.Don't Miss: How to Change Your ProtonMail Display Name That Shows Up in EmailsIn the time selection menu, select an expiration time. You can select in one-hour or one-day intervals (or both). The minimum amount of time allowed is one hour, and the maximum is 28 days. While the options make it seem like you can go slightly over 28 days, anything you select over that amount will remain 28 days.Once you have your amount of time chosen, either tap the right-arrow button (in iOS) or tap "OK" (on Android). The clock icon will now have a checkmark on it so you know it's set. If you're sending to another ProtonMail user, all you have to do now is tap the send icon (the paper plane).

Step 2: Set a Password (Only When Sending to Non-ProtonMail Users)If you're sending to a user outside of ProtonMail and you try to send it, it will not work, and you'll get an error saying that you need to first set a password. That's because self-destructing emails only work when using end-to-encryption.So to send the self-deleting email to someone using an email service other than ProtonMail, tap the lock icon to set a password and hint, then select "Apply" to finalize it. For more information on how end-to-end encryption works between ProtonMail and non-ProtonMail users, check out our full guide on the topic.More Info: How to Send End-to-End Encrypted Emails to Non-ProtonMail Recipients Once the clock and lock icons are both check-marked, you can hit the send icon.
How the Expiration Time WorksLike mentioned above, you can set the expiration time to be anywhere from 1 hour to 28 days (4 weeks), but when does that countdown actually start? Immediately. The timer won't wait until the email recipient has opened the email — it starts as soon as you hit the send button. If you set it for an hour, there's a good chance the person you're sending the message to will never actually see it, so choose wisely.Once the expiration time has been reached, the message will be automatically deleted from your sent folder. As for the recipient, if they are a ProtonMail user too, then it will automatically delete from their inbox as well. If they are an outside user, the email with the link to the encrypted message will remain, since ProtonMail can't delete emails from non-ProtonMail inboxes, but the message itself and any attachments will be deleted. There are no read receipts in ProtonMail, so there is no way you will be able to tell if the recipient has opened the message or not aside from asking them.Don't Miss: More ProtonMail Tips for iPhone & AndroidFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, YouTube, and Instagram Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Google+

How To: Remove Those Annoying Image Previews on the Updated Twitter Apps for Android & iPhone

Twitter is now forcing you to look at pictures that you might now even want to look at with their newly implemented Image Preview feature, which automatically displays image and Vine video thumbnails directly in your timeline on the updated Android and iPhone apps. That photo of your friend's baby that you don't want to see? It's there. That video of a stupid cat doing something stupid? That's also there. While many have uproariously chided in with complaints, there's no reason to get your panties in a bunch. You can get rid of those annoying image previews by changing one little setting.

Disabling Image Previews on iOS DevicesFor the Twitter app on your iPhone, just tap on theGear icon, tap Settings, and turn off Image Previews. Below, you can see Twitter with image previews on the left, and without image previews on the right (just like you like them).

Disabling Image Previews on Android DevicesOn Android, it's basically the same exact thing, except that the interface is a bit different. Tap on the Gear icon, press Settings, and uncheck Image Previews. Again, here's a before an after of Twitter with and without the previews. Pretty simple, right? Only why do they can enabling features we don't want? Sure, they could have added it and left it up to us to turn on, but that's not how Twitter rolls. They force it down our throats in hopes that we like it—but we don't. We almost never do.

How To: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS for Future Jailbreak Methods

How To: Save Your iPhone's SHSH2 Blobs So You Can Downgrade iOS for Future Jailbreak Methods
When a new jailbreak method comes out, Apple is quick to patch the vulnerability it exploits by issuing a new iOS update. If you were to accept such an update, you'd no longer be able to jailbreak your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch unless you could roll back your firmware to a version that could be jailbroken. But Apple even takes things a step further and stops signing older iOS firmware versions, which makes downgrading next to impossible. This is where your SHSH2 blobs come into play.If you save your current SHSH2 blobs, you'll always be able to roll back your firmware to the iOS version your phone is currently running — even if Apple stops signing it. This means that if a jailbreak method for your current iOS version is made available after you've updated to a future iOS version, you'll be able to do a custom restore with iTunes to downgrade your firmware to the version that works with the jailbreak method. In short, it's sort of like future-proofing jailbreak.Saving your SHSH2 blobs used to be a complicated process, but that has thankfully changed. You can now preserve your current iOS firmware in just a few easy steps, which makes it easy to restore your device if you ever make a mistake during a jailbreak attempt. It also simplifies the process of downgrading to a lower version in the event that a jailbreak method is released after you've updated.Don't Miss: All the Cool New Features in iOS 10.3 for iPad, iPhone & iPod Touch

Understanding SHSH2 BlobsIn a nutshell, SHSH and SHSH2 blobs refer to digital signatures that Apple employs to make specific IPSW files, better known as iOS software, for each of the device they make. This method ensures that only trusted software is installed on their iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches.Whenever a new iOS software is released, Apple stops signing the signatures on previous versions, thus giving users no choice but to update to the latest iOS version. So using saved SHSH2 blobs to restore using a custom firmware is akin to forging a signature on iTunes in order for it to verify the older software and allow for its installation into your device.

Step 1: Connect to Your Computer & Open iTunesTo get started, connect your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to your computer with your Lighting cable, then open iTunes if it didn't pop up automatically. Make sure you're on the device's information page, then look for the Settings section located on the left-hand side and select "Summary."

Step 2: Find Your ECID & Model IdentifierIn order to save your device's SHSH2 blobs, you'll need to find its ECID and Model Identifier numbers. To do so, simply click on the serial number located right under "Capacity" in your device's general information tab within iTunes. Each time you click on the serial number, it will show a different device identifier number, so keep clicking until this menu shows your device's ECID. Once you've found it, copy the ECID number into your clipboard as you'll need it later on. After you've sorted your ECID out, you'll need to find your device's Model Identifier. Simply follow the same steps you did when finding the ECID by clicking on the serial number in iTunes until it shows up. You don't have to copy the info, though you'll need to remember it later on and make sure it matches up with the selections you make later on.

Step 3: Convert Your ECID into HexadecimalThe tool we'll be using to extract the SHSH2 blobs works best when your ECID is a hexadecimal value. So if your ECID only contains numbers rather than a combination of letters and numbers, you'll need to convert it to hexadecimal before you proceed. To do that, simply head to this link, then paste in your ECID into the Decimal Value field, then click "Convert." From there, copy the number in the Hexidecimal Value field and save it somewhere safe, because this is the number you'll be entering into the SHSH2 extraction tool next.

Step 4: Input ECID & Model IdentifierNow that you have both the ECID and Model Identifier on hand, you're almost ready to save your SHSH2 blobs. To do that, we'll be using an open-source utility created by Redditor 1Conan, so head to the following link to access it:Access the open-source SHSH2 Blobs Saver utility From there, paste your ECID into the box under the same name, then select your specific device type and Model Identifier from the two drop-down menus provided under "Identifier." Finally, be sure to check off the CAPTCHA box to prove you're not a robot, then click "Submit."

Step 5: Save Your SHSH2 BlobsAt this point, the site will automatically save your SHSH2 blobs, so give it a few minutes to do its job. Once it's finished, you'll be greeted with a link that lets you download the SHSH2 blobs, so go ahead and click it to do so. We'd also recommend bookmarking this link since you can use it to download your files again if you ever lose them in the future. In the event that you forget your link, however, you can always go back to the site and re-enter your ECID in the "Lost your link?" box, then click "Submit" to retrieve your SHSH2 download link again. With your SHSH2 blobs now saved, you'll be prepared if and when that long-awaited jailbreak for the latest iOS version finally arrives. Once it comes to downgrade, you can use these SHSH2 blobs with the FutureRestore/Prometheus tool to get the iOS version you want back on your device.
