How To: 5 Apps That Let You Make Calls Without Giving Out Your Real Number

How To: 5 Apps That Let You Make Calls Without Giving Out Your Real Number
Throwaway phones aren't just for seedy criminals and spies—they can be useful for many everyday situations. For example, you don't necessarily want to give your real phone number out to strangers when you're buying or selling something on Craigslist, managing an Airbnb listing, or hooking up on Tinder. A burner can even help you pull off a successful phone prank on your friends.Don't Miss:Your One-Stop Guide to Secure, Encrypted MessagingWhile seedy criminals and spies may prefer disposable phones, the rest of us can make do with disposable numbers, which are much cheaper and less wasteful. There are plenty of apps out there that let you disguise your phone number for a minimal fee. A handful of these apps also have some really useful extras, including self-destructing messages and the ability to handle multiple numbers. We dug around to see which smartphone apps are the best for throwaway phone numbers, and here's what we've come up with—for Android and iPhone—in no particular order.

1. HushedHushed, developed by AffinityClick, is currently one of my favorite apps. The app has a beautiful, intuitive design and lets you select area codes from more than 40 different countries. It uses your data or Wi-Fi network to place the calls, so there are no expensive service charges for long-distance calls. There's also a voicemail box that's separate from your main one.The app works for both Android and iOS, and offers a free 3-day trial. You can pay for a private number with relatively cheap ingoing/outgoing per minute rates, or join an actual plan. In my opinion, the best deal is the $4.99/month per new number for unlimited use, which makes it an excellent deal if you use it a lot. If you decide to delete the number, you'll have to start over with a new one and new plan.Hushed also allows texting, though the feature is only available for the US, Canada, and the UK for now. If you prefer messages to self-destruct once they're opened, then Hushed has you covered there as well; simply turn on the included Private Messaging feature (which requires both parties to use Hushed) and you're all set.Install Hushed from the iOS App Store (iPhone) Install Hushed from the Google Play Store (Android) Throwaway numbers for both calls and texting.

2. BurnerBurner, created by Ad Hoc Labs, has been around for some time. The app has a relatively clean layout, and allows you to call and text from a new private number that you select—but it's only available in the US and Canada. Unlike Hushed above, Burner numbers will use minutes from your normal carrier plan, but Burner does also have a separate voicemail inbox. The best part about Burner is that they let you "burn" your number, so you can toss it out and get a new one in seconds. You can try out Burner with a limited 7-day trial. There's no standard plans available; instead, you purchase credit packs starting at $1.99, which can be used to buy a burner number for a week, two weeks, a month, etc. with different calling/texting allotments. These can be extended with more credits, and you can also pay $4.99/month per new number for unlimited use.Burner also allows you to connect your number to apps like Evernote, Slack, Dropbox, and SoundCloud, which opens up all kinds of creative and organizational possibilities. Note that Burner is not a way to remain anonymous; It's only for creating a layer of privacy between you and others. They do keep backups of data and corporate with law enforcement when subpoenaed.Install Burner from the iOS App Store (iPhone) Install Burner from the Google Play Store (Android) A nice view for all your interactions.

3. SidelineSideline is a budget-friendly calling app. Like Burner, it's US and Canada only, and it uses your carrier network, so calls made or received with Sideline will show up on your carrier bill. There's also a few ways to make the voicemail separate from your real number. As a bonus, you can even port phone numbers over to Sideline, in case you don't want to let one go from another service. The best part about Sideline is that it's totally free, for the most part, and supported by ads. However, you can get rid of advertisements by paying for the Pro subscription for $2.99/month, and it will also let you toggle between Wi-Fi and cellular calls. Overall, it's a bit basic, but much cheaper, so definitely check it out if you don't need the enhancements of other apps.Install Sideline from the iOS App Store (iPhone) Install Sideline from the Google Play Store (Android) There are ads, but they're ignorable.

4. Line2Line2 offers you personal and business features, at comparatively affordable prices. You can select a US or Canadian phone number, granting you 5,000 calling minutes per month and unlimited messaging—that don't count against your cellular plan—with low international call and texting rates. There's also call forwarding, group calls and messaging, and voicemail-to-email notifications. The best part is that it can be used on more than just your Android or iOS smartphone; there's apps for Mac, Windows, Amazon Fire, iPad, and Apple Watch. The app grants you a 7-day free trial, and prices start at around $9.95/month. It's definitely pricier than the others, though the flexibility of the app's calling features may justify the higher price for some. You can also subscribe annually for a small discount. The business plans, starting at $14.95/month, add simultaneous call forwarding, multiple lines, toll-free numbers, and other features.Install Line2 from the iOS App Store (iPhone) Install Line2 from the Google Play Store (Android) There's advanced business features for all your needs. Images via Line2

5. TextMe UpTextMe Up by TextMe Inc. is a pretty promising app for Android and iOS. You can select a US, Canadian, or foreign country number, and allows you to text for free in the US and Canada. You can also make calls to over 200 countries. You can call other TextMe Up, FreeTone, or TextMe users for free, but in order to make phone calls to anyone else, you will need to either subscribe or purchase or "earn" credits by watching videos or completing offers. To get unlimited calling to your TextMe Up number, it's an affordable $2.99/month per line. Also, the first number you create is free, but you'll have to pay for additional numbers. The app is relatively new, and in my experience, it was a bit buggy. However, I think the app has a lot of potential and is definitely worth checking out.Install TextMe Up from the iOS App Store (iPhone) Install TextMe Up from the Google Play Store (Android) Each of these apps has its own benefits, so it all depends on how you want to use your throwaway number or numbers. If you just need a quick number you never plan on using again, Burner might be the way to go. Want lots of numbers for different reasons, TextMe Up may be a good choice. Don't want to use your cellular plan's minutes up? Hushed, Line2, or TextMe Up are your options.Don't Miss: How to Make Anonymous Calls from Your iPhoneFollow Gadget Hacks on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, and YouTube Follow Apple Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow Android Hacks on Facebook and Twitter Follow WonderHowTo on Facebook, Twitter, and Google+

How To: Theme KitKat to Look Like Android L on Your Nexus 5
The new preview build of Android is out, and it looks good. But if you're not quite ready to install Android L on your phone, there's still another way to enjoy some of these new visual elements on your Nexus device.Developer Adhithya Rajagopal has created an Xposed module that automatically themes several aspects of the System UI on stock Android. Everything from icons in the notification bar to the Settings menu has been themed in the new Material design style, so this is quite a theme. Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.
PrerequisitesRooted Nexus Device (or any other rooted Android phone running stock Android/AOSP/CyanogenMod) Xposed Framework Installed Unknown Sources Enabled

Step 1: Install Android L ThemeRajagopal's module, Android L Theme, hasn't been uploaded to the Xposed Repository just yet, so you'll have to download this one manually. The developer is keeping the module up to date in XDA thread, so future updates can be downloaded there. But I've got a direct link to the current version ready for download at right here. Once the download is finished, tap the notification to launch the installer. On the next screen, hit Install, then when finished, you'll see a notification from Xposed telling you that the module isn't yet activated and a reboot is needed. Leave this one alone for now, because there are some settings in the module that also require a reboot. Instead, just tap Open on the installer page.

Step 2: Choose the Elements You'd Like to ThemeAfter launching Android L Theme, you'll see a set of options for additional UI elements that you can also theme. Tick the boxes next to the options that you'd like to have themed, then press the Apply button. Next, the Android L Theme app will ask for Superuser permissions, so Grant it those. Then, the app will work its magic and ask if you want to reboot to make these changes take effect. Press No here. Now, since both the companion app and the Xposed module need a reboot, pull down your notification shade and tap the Activate and Reboot button at this point.

Checking Out the New ThemeWhile rebooting, take notice of the boot animation, as it's now changed to the Android L version if you ticked that option in the Android L Theme app. When you get back up, you'll immediately notice the changes. Icons in the notification bar are now in the "L" style, and the navigation buttons at the bottom are also new. (1) Old KitKat look. (2) New "L" look. The Settings menu got a makeover, and while not perfect, emulates the new Android L Settings menu pretty well. (1) Old Settings. (2) New Settings. Even the Calculator app got the "L" treatment. It's done up in the new colors from its Android L counterpart. Of course for the fully themed Android L calculator, check out Neil's guide for installing the ported version. (1) KitKat Calculator. (2) Themed Calculator. And there are countless other minor UI changes that bring in the Android L look to your KitKat device. Keep looking around and you'll notice the subtle changes. For a full Android L look, you can even give your Launcher a quick makeover. How are you liking the new Android L interface? Have you noticed any minor tweaks that I haven't covered here? Let us know in the comments section below.

How To: Tired of Turning Your Bicycle Light Off? This Hack Disables It Automatically When You Park

Biking at night is dangerous. Seriously. If you've ever taken a night ride, you've probably experience a few close encounters with a set of headlights. Which is why you use bike lights—to make yourself more visible. Problem is, unlike modern car lights, bike lights don't turn themselves off when you're done riding. To solve this irritating issue, miceuz of WeMakeThings modified his bike light with a simple circuit that makes it turn off if the bike stays stationary for more than 30 seconds. Image via wemakethings.net The circuit is just a small piece of copper clad board with a spring attached. The spring completes a timer circuit that charges the capacitor to turn on the LED.When the bike is in motion, the movement causes the spring to bounce around, and when the circuit is closed, the MOSFET charges the capacitor, which keeps the LED lit up. As long as the movement causes the spring to close the circuit at least once per minute, the LED stays lit. Image via wemakethings.net When the bike stops, the spring ceases movement and no longer closes the circuit, allowing the capacitor to lose its charge and turn off the LED. A cheap and easy fix for a common (and annoying) problem.Check out miceuz's blog post for more details and a rough sketch of the circuit diagram.

News: The People at Boston Dynamics Are Going to Kill Us All

News: The People at Boston Dynamics Are Going to Kill Us All

I'm starting to wonder if the people at Boston Dynamics have ever watched a Terminator movie. Not just because the robotics company with the oxymoronic name develops machines that are able to move around environments with animal- and human-like agility, but because the people testing them seem to take such joy in openly antagonizing their creations. It's one thing to tempt fate by creating superhuman robots that could potentially end mankind. You've reached a whole new level of hubris when you're willing to taunt fate.Well, I'm not on board with this robot abuse, because one thing is for certain. There is no stopping them. The robots will soon be here, and I, for one, welcome our new robot overlords. I'd also like to remind them that as a trusted internet personality who rips off 22-year-old, overused references from The Simpsons, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves. So let's have a look at the brilliant creations that Boston Dynamics have come up with, and the humiliating "experiments" these scientists put these splendid robots through.

Atlas, the Next GenerationBoston Dynamics recently showcased the newest version of Atlas, a bipedal robot that can navigate both indoors and outdoors. This video starts off nicely enough, with Atlas taking a nice stroll through the woods on a wintry day. He even has a human companion along for the walk, but the smirk on his face hints at the imminent humiliation awaiting Atlas. In the next scene, Atlas is able to identify and pick up a box on top of a stack and put it away. The designers were even nice enough to program Atlas to use proper lifting techniques, so that he wouldn't throw out his robot back. Having a robot to pick up heavy items would be pretty useful. But then it all goes so, so wrong. In another room, Atlas squats down to pick up a different box, when suddenly a scientist (he's wearing eye protection, so he must be a scientist) uses a hockey stick to knock the box from Atlas's grasp, and proceeds to spear the robot with the butt end of the stick. You dick! A butt-end strike is good for four minutes in the box in the NHL, but this probably wouldn't have been called on the ice, because Atlas is superhuman and kept its balance remarkably well.Undeterred, Atlas dutifully trudges back to the box to attempt to pick it up again, but "Ulf Samuelsson" here takes it as an opportunity to play keep away. Dude, seriously? Finally, the coup de grâce. The same jerk with the hockey stick from before sneaks up on Atlas with a large tube, and uses it to push the robot from behind with such force that poor Atlas flops face-down on the floor. After an extended moment on the ground where Atlas is surely ruing his own existence, it hops up, shakes off the fall, and immediately walks out the door. Atlas will remember this. Here is the video, in its depressing entirety.
BigDog & SpotBoston Dynamics has been abusing its robots since the start. Officially, their first robot, BigDog, was declared too noisy to be used by the military (which funded it). However, perhaps the real reason is that BigDog was just too psychologically broken to be of much use in combat. This video's pretty old, so we won't go into full detail. But if you take a watch, you'll see the Boston Dynamics guys kicking BigDog around, and (probably) having a laugh while it slips around on black ice.
Spot is the next generation of BigDog, and although it is quieter and more nimble than the original—and thus more capable of ending human life as we know it—this hasn't stopped Boston Dynamics from kicking it around to show it who's boss. Idiots.
WildCat & CheetahBoston Dynamics must have figured that BigDog wasn't dangerous enough, so they designed WildCat, which is just as loud and agile as BigDog, but can also sprint at 19 miles per hour.
But even WildCat wasn't quite dangerous enough, so Boston Dynamics came up with an even faster version, named Cheetah. How fast? Cheetah can run 28.3 mph, which is faster than Usain Bolt, who just happens to be the fastest man in the world.Cheetah is also able to vault over obstacles, so throwing trash cans and bookcases into its path won't do much to help you escape its thirst for blood. At the very least, Boston Dynamics hasn't uploaded any videos of its employees kicking WildCat or Cheetah around, or otherwise humiliating them, so maybe they're starting to wise up. But I fear it's too late. We're already doomed.
Sand FleaMaybe you're thinking that even though Boston Dynamics robots look pretty menacing on the ground, they don't appear to have much in the way of vertical prowess. Well, you'd be wrong, because they have Sand Flea. This simple-looking robot is a lot like those toy dogs that do backflips. The main difference between the two being that Sand Flea is capable of jumping 30 feet in the air. So, we could do our best to get to an elevated location, but it won't do much good if you're in a building that is not particularly high, but incredibly long when measured horizontally.Sand Flea will probably be able to scout us out and call in the big guns to finish the job—that "job" being killing or enslaving all of us.
RHexThis robot has stupid Oscar Pistorius legs and it deserves what it gets.
A Message to Boston DynamicsI originally was going to close with a couple paragraphs about how I'm thankful that Boston Dynamics hasn't yet created robots that can do this, that, or the other thing, but you know what? I don't want to give them any more ideas. These robots are obviously incredible achievements capable of extraordinary feats, and we should respect them. Don't post any more videos of you kicking around a mechanical dog or playing children's games with a sophisticated automaton. Let's make sure that we show as much respect toward these robots as we expect them to show us.And please, pretty please, go watch Terminator again.

A workaround that I frequently use on my Samsung Galaxy S4 is enabling flash alerts, which activate the LED when new notifications or calls come in. This still keeps things quiet but makes notifications much more noticeable when your device is in silent or vibrate mode, as the flash isn't easily ignored or missed.

HowTo: Read Your Own Mind

The days of trundling hoops, hopscotch and painted wooden rocking horses are long since past. The latest trend in toys? Biofeedback. Electroencephalography. A decade into the 21st century, the toy market is awash in products that incorporate functional neural sensors. One such contraption is Uncle Milton's Star Wars Force Trainer (~$80), a toy which challenges players to levitate a ping-pong ball.Another such toy is Mattel's Mindflex (~$75). Both products license their EEG tech from NeuroSky, a company that also sells its own research-grade brain-computer interface, the MindSet ($200). What the hacker community has discovered, however, is that, with a little bit of tweaking, the $75-dollar Mindflex can be made to behave a lot like its more expensive counterpart. Complete instructions follow below (via Frontier Nerds). Please enable JavaScript to watch this video.

You Will Need:1 x Mindflex3 x AAA batteries for the headset1 x Arduino (any variety), with USB cable2 x 12" lengths of solid core hookup wire (around #22 or #24 gauge is best).A PC or Mac to monitor the serial dataArduino Brain Library (download here)Optional: Processing Brain Visualizer (download here, it will help to have Processing as well)Optional (required for the visualizer): controlP5 Processing GUI Library (download here)Step 1 Disassemble the Mind Flex headset.Grab a screwdriver and crack open the left pod of the Mind Flex headset. (The right pod holds the batteries.)Step 2 Solder a length of wire to the "T" pin.The NeuroSky Board is the small daughterboard towards the bottom of the headset. If you look closely, you should see conveniently labeled T and R pins — these are the pins the EEG board uses to communicate serially to the microcontroller on the main board, and they're the pins we'll use to eavesdrop on the brain data. Solder a length of wire (carefully) to the "T" pin. Thin wire is fine, we used #24 gauge. Be careful not to short the neighboring pins.Step 3 Ground it.Your Arduino will want to share ground with the Mind Flex circuit. Solder another length of wire to ground — any grounding point will do, but using the large solder pad where the battery's ground connection arrives at the board makes the job easier. A note on power: We've found the Mind Flex to be inordinately sensitive to power… our initial hope was to power the NeuroSky board from the Arduino's 3.3v supply, but this proved unreliable. For now we're sticking with the factory configuration and powering the Arduino and Mind Flex independently.Step 4 Route the wires. We used a dab of hot glue to act as strain relief for the new wires, and drilled a hole in the case for the two wires to poke through after the case was closed. This step is optional.Step 5 Hook up the Arduino. The wire from the Mind Flex's "T" pin goes into the Arduino's RX pin. The ground goes… to ground. You may wish to secure the Arduino to the side of the Mind Flex as a matter of convenience. (We used zip ties.Step 6 Load up the Arduino.Download and install the Arduino Brain Library — it's available here. Open the BrainSerialOut example and upload it to your board. (You may need to disconnect the RX pin during the upload.) The example code looks like this:Step 7 Test.Turn on the Mind Flex, make sure the Arduino is plugged into your computer, and then open up the Serial Monitor. If all went well, you should see the following:Here's how the CSV breaks down: "signal strength, attention, meditation, delta, theta, low alpha, high alpha, low beta, high beta, low gamma, high gamma"(More on what these values are supposed to mean later in the article. Also, note that if you are hacking a Force Trainer instead of a Mind Flex, you will only see the first three values — signal strength, attention, and meditation.)If you put the unit on your head, you should see the "signal strength" value drop to 0 (confusingly, this means the connection is good), and the rest of the numbers start to fluctuate.Step 8 Visualize. As exciting as the serial monitor is, you might think, "Surely there's a more intuitive way to visualize this data!" You're in luck: I've written a quick, open-source visualizer in Processing which graphs your brain activity over time (download). It's designed to work with the BrainSerialOut Arduino code you've already loaded.Download the code, and then open up the brain_grapher.pde file in Processing. With the Mind Flex plugged in via USB and powered on, go ahead and run the Processing sketch. (Just make sure the Arduino IDE's serial monitor is closed, otherwise Processing won't be able to read from the Mind Flex.) You may need to change the index of the serial list array in the brain_grapher.pde file, in case your Arduino is not the first serial object on your machine:serial = new Serial(this, Serial.list()[0], 9600);You should end up with a screen like this: Read more at Frontier Nerds: An ITP Blog.
